Keep America Beautiful is committed to helping Americans better understand recycling and its potential for economic, environmental and community benefits by working with industry, government, and other nonprofits to make recycling more sustainable. By educating and engaging individuals to recycle more of the right things the right way—at home, at work and on-the-go—we can help make recycling more economically viable, creating jobs and providing recyclables to manufacture new products and packaging, while continuing to reap greater environmental and community benefits.
America Recycles Day (ARD), a Keep America Beautiful initiative, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. America Recycles Day takes place annually on and in the weeks leading into Nov. 15. This year's theme – "Bathrooms, Bags & Gadgets" – shines a light on some of the everyday but not "top of mind" consumer products, which can and should be given another life through recycling. These include personal care items commonly found in the bathroom, like haircare and mouthwash bottles; plastic bags, such as those used at retail stores, and plastic wrap used in packaging paper towels, toilet paper or dry cleaning; and consumer electronics and gadgets, such as mobile phones, tablets, game consoles, televisions and more.
America Recycles Day encourages individuals and businesses to take the pledge to recycle online at AmericaRecyclesDay.org. Using Keep America Beautiful' s tested behavior change model, the America Recycles Day pledge was developed as a 3-step process: Learn (about recycling); Act (take the pledge); Share (on social media and encourage your friends). Each step deepens pledge leading to lasting positive recycling behavior's.
In addition to taking the pledge, businesses, nonprofits and community groups can register an recycling event—whether that be an e-waste collection event, recycling information booth, recycling workshop or beyond. Thousands of events nationwide convene each year to spread the campaign message and drive more people to take the pledge online.
Now in its 17th year, America Recycles Day has a social media presence with over 10,000 "likes" on it's unique Facebook page, over 5,000 followers on Twitter (@recyclesday) and a widely adopted hashtag, #AmericaRecyclesDay. With social media playing a key role in promoting November 15th, the campaign developed a comprehensive and engaging social media strategy that included an "I Will Recycle" sweepstakes encouraging people to take the pledge to recycle, infographics and shareable content tied to this year's theme – "Bathroom, Bags& Gadgets" and even three exclusive animated America Recycles Day GIFs.
