In 2019, Hulu partnered with CNN to raise awareness for the disparity between representations of men and women in public art. In 2020 and 2021, we began to take action by commissioning public monuments featuring historic women, evening the score just a bit but proving our commitment to gender parity in storytelling. But in the spirit of public art, we wanted to make sure these monuments, and their message, are as accessible and impactful as possible. That means reaching audiences beyond Miami, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Everyone should have the chance to be inspired by these women, and what stories that are Made By Her can do.
Throughout history, women’s contributions and discoveries have been overlooked, forgotten, or hijacked. This inequality is evident in our public spaces, where real, accomplished women are frequently missing. That’s why Hulu commissioned monuments to honor the lives and spirits of three visionaries who made history: Coretta Scott King in Atlanta, Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Miami, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Los Angeles. Hulu partnered with artist Saya Woolfalk to create monuments in three American cities to celebrate and memorialize their accomplishments. And as the current pandemic leaves us craving trips to museums, galleries and installations, Hulu has brought the inspiration to you via microsite which allows you to visit the monuments straight through your mobile device.
Also viewable on this microsite, we released three animated stories this past Women’s Equality Day to explore each woman’s humanity and achievements. Each short used a personalized art style to help propel us into Coretta, Marjory and Ruth’s worlds to help inspire this generation of millennial parents and their children to pursue their dreams and make a difference.
