Carnival Cruise Line tasked our team at Bold Man and the Sea Media to create a video surrounding the Coin Ceremony for their newest ship, the Carnival Panorama. As part of a long-storied maritime tradition, each ship in the Carnival fleet goes through a Coin Ceremony in which they are blessed with a ceremony coin. As Carnival Panorama was preparing to set sail in Long Beach, California, Carnival wanted to leverage this event to hammer home the connection between the Carnival Panorama and its new home.
In order to best marry the concepts of the Carnival Panorama and its soon-to-home in California, we chose to take the star of the ceremony, the Panorama ceremony coin, on its own personal journey through the sights and sounds of California. To best tell this story, we framed the journey through the lens of a nostalgic red Viewmaster with the ceremony coin tucked inside its slot. Through the viewmaster, we were able to use a unique slide transition to take us across all of California with the flip of a switch. We utilized the Panorama’s setting to our advantage, capitalizing on the iconic landmarks and bountiful nature of the state while also shooting with California native and one of Carnival’s own celebrity partners, Guy Fieri. The journey takes us all the way to the ship’s home in the Long Beach Terminal, where we see the coin arrive at its destination aboard Carnival Panorama and take part in the iconic Coin Ceremony.
Upon release, “Carnival Panorama: Journey to the Coin Ceremony” garnered over 100,000 views across Carnival’s social media pages. Our attempts to bring Carnival Panorama to audiences on the West Coast through a uniquely Carnival yet distinctly Californian story won over audiences on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Hundreds of comments and shares later, it became clear that audiences were ready to set sail aboard Carnival’s newest ship yet.
