Objectives

The objective of WSL One Ocean is to harness the global platform of the World Surf League (WSL) to drive meaningful ocean conservation and climate action. As surfers, the ocean is our arena, and we have a deep responsibility to protect and preserve it. Launched as a pioneering initiative, WSL One Ocean is driven by the belief that sport can inspire change, engage audiences and set new trends globally.

Our work is guided by the idea that collective action is essential to address the critical environmental challenges facing our ocean. We aim to engage a global audience, including surfers, fans, and coastal communities, by raising awareness about the importance of ocean health and mobilizing efforts to protect marine ecosystems.

Specific goals include supporting local communities through nature-based restoration projects, reducing plastic pollution by implementing sustainable practices at our events, and partnering with leading environmental organizations to amplify our impact. By aligning with global frameworks like the UN Sports for Climate Action and collaborating with sustainability partners like YETI and SHISEIDO, we strive to create a ripple effect that extends beyond our events, empowering individuals and organizations to take action for the ocean.

Ultimately, our mission is to ensure that the ocean remains healthy and vibrant for future generations, aligning our efforts with the broader global movement to protect and sustain the marine environment.

Strategy and Execution

To bring the WSL One Ocean initiative to life, we developed a comprehensive strategy centered around leveraging the World Surf League’s global platform to inspire meaningful action for ocean conservation. Our approach was rooted in collaboration, community engagement, and innovative partnerships, with the goal of creating a lasting impact on marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

We identified key areas where WSL One Ocean could make a significant difference, focusing on Championship Tour locations and projects aligned to supporting coastal nature-based restoration initaitves, reducing plastic pollution, and raising awareness about the importance of ocean health. We aligned our efforts with international frameworks such as the UN Sports for Climate Action, Sports for Nature, and collaborated with global sustainability partners YETI, and SHISEIDO to amplify our impact alongside regional partners.

Our strategy was executed across multiple touchpoints, including across the WSL Championship Tour in the USA, Portugal, Australia, Tahiti, El Salvador, and Brazil. We integrated sustainable practices into event operations, such as reducing single-serve plastics, promoting reusable alternatives, and organizing local impact projects. Additionally, we worked closely with local NGOs, WSL PURE grantees, and community groups to implement restoration projects, such as coral reef rehabilitation and native plantings.

One of the unique aspects of WSL One Ocean was our focus on athlete engagement. We empowered WSL athletes to serve as ambassadors for ocean conservation, encouraging them to participate in community events, promote sustainable practices, and share stories about the importance of protecting the ocean. This not only heightened the visibility of our initiatives, but also fostered a deeper connection between our audience and the cause.

Throughout the WSL One Ocean intiative, we faced challenges, including logistical complexities of implementing sustainable practices across global events, aligning goals from multiple stakeholders, and navigating varying environmental regulations in different countries. To overcome these obstacles, we relied on our strong network of partners and collaborators, who provided invaluable expertise and resources. Additionally, we maintained a flexible approach, adapting our strategies to the unique needs and circumstances of each location.

What sets WSL One Ocean apart is our ability to integrate environmental stewardship into the fabric of professional surfing. By combining the power of sport with a commitment to sustainability, we’ve created a model that not only promotes environmental responsibility but also inspires fans around the world to take action. We believe when sport and sustainability unite, we can drive meaningful change for the planet.

Through our strategic execution and unwavering dedication, WSL One Ocean has successfully mobilized a global community of ocean advocates, leaving a positive and lasting impact on our one ocean.
