FX's Alien: Earth - Cat Video Series

Entered in Storytelling

Objective

To launch FX’s Alien: Earth, we needed to honor the legacy of one of the most iconic sci-fi franchises in cinematic history while signaling a bold new chapter. Our solution: begin not with terror, but with curiosity.

Before releasing any footage publicly, we seeded the campaign with 100 superfans. Each received a Weyland-Yutani branded Pelican case filled with in-world swag - most notably a cat collar and tag, an ode to Jonesy from the original Alien, and a hard drive containing five exclusive POV videos from the Maginot ship’s resident cat.

These bespoke videos were shot on location in Thailand with social distribution top of mind. The objective was to ignite early anticipation, reward franchise loyalists with a lore-aware entry point, and spark organic speculation before the content ever hit social platforms.

Strategy

Launching within a legacy franchise requires reverence and reinvention. Our strategy was to build credibility with core fans first, then let their excitement fuel broader awareness.

Phase one began with premium mailers sent to 100 carefully selected superfans and franchise devotees. The Weyland-Yutani Pelican case immediately signaled authenticity. Inside, the cat collar and tag served as a tactile nod to Jonesy, while the hard drive gave recipients exclusive first access to five Easter egg–laden POV videos shot from the perspective of the Maginot ship’s cat.

By granting early access, we turned fans into collaborators. The result was a surge of unboxing videos, deep-dive breakdowns, and theory threads dissecting every frame. Speculation spread organically before the general public even saw the content.

Phase two expanded the reach: the same POV videos were released across social platforms, now amplified by existing fan analysis and anticipation. The restrained storytelling, subtle cast appearances, environmental clues, and visual breadcrumbs, encouraged repeat viewing and discourse.

By anchoring the launch in lore while presenting it through a modern, platform-native POV format, we delivered a campaign that felt both cinematic and culturally fluent.

Results

The mailer-first strategy ignited immediate fan engagement, generating a wave of organic unboxings, theory breakdowns, and social speculation that primed audiences for the public release.

Once launched broadly, the cat POV videos drove strong engagement and conversation across platforms, with fans celebrating the thoughtful Jonesy homage and dissecting hidden clues. The campaign also secured earned coverage from outlets like DeadlineFangoria, Gizmodo, and more extending reach beyond social and reinforcing the creative boldness of the approach.

Most importantly, the launch established Alien: Earth as a series that understands its legacy, and isn’t afraid to evolve it. In a franchise built on spectacle and fear, we proved that curiosity (and a cat) could be the most powerful way to begin.
