Club 520

Entered in Sports Podcast

Objective

Jeff Teague knows ball. The journeyman point guard played for five teams across his twelve-year career. Over that time, he crossed paths with countless Hall of Famers and racked up a treasure trove of never-before-told NBA stories. That stocked vault of anecdotes has propelled Teague, along with his close friends and co-hosts DJ Wells and Bishop "B Hen" Henn, and their podcast, Club 520, to the top of the charts. It’s also brought advertisers in droves, looking to team up with the former baller to elevate their brands. Currently, Adidas serves as Club 520’s primary partner, making them the first ever podcast to have an exclusive shoe deal.

On top of a slew of powerful sponsors, Club 520 has welcomed hordes of fans seeking refuge from the over-saturated, hyper-analytical world of traditional basketball podcasting. While any average joe with a mic can read off a stat sheet, the hosts’ unique backgrounds lets them lean heavily on their endless stockpile of insider information. Though that NBA-veteran status doesn’t mean Jeff Teague and the rest of Club 520 are afraid to give their takes on the modern game. Fans turn to Club 520 for in-the-moment breakdowns just as much as they tune in for behind-the-scenes stories. Their episode of the internet-shattering Luka Doncic trade last year racked up over a million views, for example, joining a handful of other quick-reaction viral hits from the podcast.

Strategy

Club 520 was inspired by a desire to carve out an authentic space where basketball culture intersects with everyday life. Jeff Teague, former NBA All-Star turned high school basketball coach, envisioned a platform where he could share memorable and funny stories from his career. Alongside his friends and co-hosts, DJ Wells and Bishop B Henn, Jeff wanted to discuss life, relationships, and culture in a relaxed, genuine manner.

Jeff recognized a gap in the market for a podcast that combined traditional, formal basketball insights with everyday conversations. Jeff and his co-hosts aimed to create a star-powered, but grounded show that felt like a casual hangout with friends, filled with engaging and unfiltered stories. Their goal was to build a community centered on authenticity and relatability, making the audience feel personally connected to the hosts and guests. This sort of rapport can only be achieved through years of genuine friendship, making episodes of Club 520 feel familiar to anyone who has even had a heated MJ vs. Lebron GOAT conversation at the watercooler.

As NBA fandom becomes increasingly global, people are growing more interested in the personal lives of their favorite players. Club 520 excels in expanding that purview with respect and authenticity, giving fans a look even further behind the curtain while breaking down everything from interpersonal player relationships, off-court drama and rumor mill fodder. Where other podcasts trade in speculation, Club 520 offers inside scoops that you literally can’t get anywhere else.

Club 520’s credentials for NBA coverage are bulletproof, but the show's hosts are equally equipped to tackle trends, viral moments, and developments across the sports landscape. In the wake of Wrestlemania, the biggest night of the WWE calendar, Club 520 featured an interview with Jacob Fatu the morning after his historic championship win over LA Knight. This candid discussion featured a handful of breakout moments that populated the timelines of wrestling fans the world over. Those viral moments cemented Chime’s partnership with Club 520, with the two currently cooking up plans to work together again for a collaborative integration at this year's Summer Slam, another premier WWE event. With Chime as a premier sponsor, Club 520 has expanded into more live shows and pop-ups, moving Teague and co-hosts DJ Wells and B Hen off of the couch and into live events across the sports landscape.

Results

Since joining The Volume in October 2023, Club 520’s YouTube channel has gone from 35,000 subscribers to over 798,000. The show boasts a whopping 420M views across Youtube, with a handful of videos breaking the 1M view mark and dozens of viral breakout videos.

Club 520’s mix of content drives fans from a multitude of subcultures to the show. Basketball junkies get post-game breakdowns, hip-hop heads get album reviews, and pop-culture enthusiasts get hot takes all about the latest breaking news or trending videos. The show’s  blend of vibes and versatility has done so well that it spawned a successful spinoff live show called 520 in the Morning, a shorter form daily show tackling topics and sports moments that take place between episodes of the flagship program.
