The Official Game of Thrones Podcast: House of the Dragon is a companion podcast to HBO’s House of the Dragon series that launched on HBO Max. The podcast was created to give listeners more insight into the world of Game of Thrones, behind-the-scenes details and interviews with cast members. The aim was to connect with the audience on a deeper level and provide additional context and content to superfans, new fans of the show, and everyone in between.
Over the season’s 18 episodes, 3 were released ahead of the House of the Dragon premiere to prepare fans for the new show, 10 episodes served as companion pieces to the show as it aired, and 5 went up after the finale, to continue the exploration and engagement with the series. Hosts Jason Concepcion and Greta Johnsen had a variety of guests on the podcast including George R.R. Martin, Milly Alcock, Olivia Cooke, and Paddy Considine. They also interviewed Kit Harington at the first ever Game of Thrones Fan Convention. The goal was to keep all types of listeners engaged before, during, and after the show aired in hopes of creating a stronger connection to the audience by giving them a different medium to consume Game of Thrones content.
The podcast saw immense success across a variety of platforms. The show consistently charted on Apple’s Top US Charts, peaking at #1, and remaining in the top 50 podcasts for a majority of the season. It was also featured across different podcast platforms. The show garnered several press hits across several media outlets like Bloomberg, AdWeek, Hollywood Reporter and Variety. One of the hosts, Jason Concepcion, was even featured on Jeopardy where he asked a question regarding this podcast. This shows the reach that the Game of Thrones name and podcast has across the pop culture landscape.
