Then vs. Now: Answering Questions From Your 6th Grade Self

Entered in Education

Objective

In 2018, Director of Video, Brandan Roberts filmed 6th-grade students at McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee asking questions for their future selves. Those same boys—now young men—are watching and responding to their childhood selves.

What unfolds is far more than a nostalgic video. It’s a powerful reflection on growth, identity, and the passage of time. Their reactions range from laughter to tears, revealing personal transformations, newfound wisdom, and genuine emotion.

From favorite foods to life advice, each answer captures the complexity of growing up. As one viewer put it, “Why'd this make me so emotional? I miss being young.” The video resonates not only with the students and their families but with anyone who has ever wondered how far they've come since childhood.

The project is a beautiful reminder that education is about more than academics—it's about growing into yourself.

Strategy

This concept was inspired by the movie Boyhood. At schools we have the unique ability to capture the passage of time. We had no idea this was going to blow up the way it did.

Results

This video garnered more than 150 million views and has driven admissions and publicity for the McCallie School to all time highs.
