Objective

The World Bank Group's Development Podcast podcast, which releases monthly, provides listeners with expert-led discussions and real-world examples on critical topics for solving global poverty and creating a livable planet, with discussions on issues like climate change, access to electricity, AI,  and gender equality. It effectively communicates how the World Bank Group's projects and institutions, are working to address these challenges. By featuring conversations with both experts and the people directly affected by development initiatives, the podcast offers a human-centered perspective.

The Development Podcast brings together the latest data, research and cutting-edge solutions that can pave the way to a sustainable future. Its commitment to accessibility, including providing transcripts and show notes for each episode, further solidifies its value as an informative and impactful digital resource that deserves to be recognized for excellence.

Strategy

The podcast started in 2020, right before COVID-19 and took shape during the lockdowns as a way to reach our audiences. The podcast is produced monthly by real people, not AI. We book experts from around the world to discuss issues, with a new issue tackled each month. We loop back on issues here and there to show how the World Bank Group and others have progressed on those issues and what barriers still remain.

The goal was to create a flagship podcast that would go beyond traditional news formats to provide a deeper, more human-centered look at international development. Our plan of action began with identifying the most pressing global challenges that aligned with the World Bank's work, such as climate change, poverty, and gender equality. We then sought out leading experts and individuals directly affected by these issues to share their experiences and insights. The execution involves a monthly production cycle, from booking and recording to editing and publishing, ensuring each episode is packed with data, research, and tangible solutions. A key feature of the podcast is its focus on the real-world impact of development projects, bringing to life the work of institutions like the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), and making complex topics understandable to a wider audience.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was adapting our production process during the global lockdowns. What started as in-person interviews quickly pivoted to remote recordings, which required us to develop new strategies for audio quality and seamless collaboration across different time zones. We overcame this by investing in better remote recording technology and developing a streamlined production workflow that allowed us to maintain our monthly schedule without compromising quality. Our work is unique because it blends high-level economic and social analysis with personal narratives, creating a platform that is both educational and deeply relatable. By providing detailed insights, real-world examples, and accessible resources like transcripts, the Development Podcast distinguishes itself as an essential source for anyone interested in making a difference in the world.

Results

The Development Podcast was born out of a challenge: finding a new way to connect with our audience during the unprecedented global disruption of 2020. The goal was simple—to create a new channel when traditional methods were impossible. We didn't just meet that goal; we exceeded it, building a reliable monthly platform that has continued to grow and thrive.

We consider the podcast a success because we've found a way to take the complex world of international development and make it both accessible and truly engaging. We do this by weaving together data-driven analysis with powerful human stories, bridging the gap between high-level policy and real-world impact. This unique approach allows us to make topics like climate change and poverty solutions feel relatable to a global audience.

We make sure our audiences can find the podcast each month by promoting new episodes on our homepage, in our weekly newsletters, and across all our social media channels. We also work directly with the partners and experts who appear on the show, giving them promotional materials to share with their own networks. This integrated approach ensures every episode reaches the widest possible audience, maximizing its potential to inform and inspire.
