GAME 7's Amazon Prime Video Anthology Series: Season 1

Entered in Sports

Objective

GAME 7’s Amazon Prime Video series was created with the objective to capture the essence of sports at the most pivotal moments - showcasing the high-stakes drama, raw emotion, and determination as the driving force. The goal was to immerse viewers in the most intense, singular moments that define history in sports. This series is a deep-dive into the pressure filled atmosphere of a decisive GAME 7, exploring how athletes, coaches, and fans experience the overarching moments. With compelling personal narratives, and storytelling of expert analysis, "GAME 7" aims to celebrate the passion and resilience that make the big moments count in sports. Beyond revealing the events of high-pressure games, the series delves into the cognitive and physical toll these moments take on competitors, and a look into the intimacy of what it means to play.

The series compiled comprehensive playoff series narratives into limited single standalone episodes while maintaining sentimental and compelling quality. The process required comprehensive accuracy; themes of perseverance, character, and reclamation stood as a guiding point for storytelling, and assured that each episode dwelt on its own, while also playing a part in the anthology concept on human resilience.

Strategy

GAME 7’s Amazon Prime Video five-part anthology series redefines how sports stories are told, highlighting the personal stories of victory, loss, and legacy. The series delves into the passion and human stakes of the most pivotal all-or-nothing moments across MLB, NBA, and NHL history, with the goal of merging both the drama of the game, as well as what the defining moments represent for players, teams, and fans.

Bringing this project to life involved a clear storytelling perspective; it would be a cinematic, character first recounting of legendary games through the rare, personal lens of the athletes who experienced them. With the support of Amazon Prime Video and Words + Pictures, the series lined up a selection of Game 7s that spoke to a wide range of generations and fanbases; from the gripping 1994 Stanley Cup Final between the Rangers and Canucks, to the Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series win, and heartwrenching end to a title drought, each selection was sought out not only for its in-game stakes, but for its enduring temperamental and cultural impact.

The execution focused on extensive athlete interviews that went beyond just game analysis. The testament of these players reflected the weight of these moments; the preparation, fear, happiness, and in some instances, the grief of coming up short. To pay homage to both sides of victory and loss, GAME 7 took a unique approach in highlighting the paralleled emotional depth. The GAME 7 team prioritized transparency, and understanding in the interview process, structuring the series as a framework of legacy, and allowing players who came out on both the losing and winning end to restore their narratives, and speak on the moments that still hold weight today.

Effectively, GAME 7 fused original real footage with a modern cinematic production approach to invite viewers to reimagine the games from a never-before-seen angle. Acquiring the rights of usage across diverse leagues and archival footage was a challenge, and required methodical collaboration and execution. For example, GAME 7 sought to repurpose the old 16mm film from the 1987 documentary "The Boys on the Bus" for the 1987 Edmonton Oilers episode. Weaving that old footage with archival game footage and the new extensive interviews with players, as well as two of the film crew members from that documentary, was a very unique aspect brought to life. Additionally, each episode featured music, sound bites, and different themes from the time period of the episode to help contextualize the concept and bring the audience back to that given time. The end result gave fans episodes that relived those tension and high-stake games, intertwined with personal anecdotes.

The GAME 7 Anthology series extends beyond wins and losses, and highlights what it means to bear the burden of expectations, perform under intense pressure, and to find meaning in both praise and defeat. The series' ability to reshape quintessential sports moments into deeply relatable stories is what presents GAME 7 as a unique and inspirational work.
