Objective

After the success of its first two seasons, 48 Hours: Post Mortem returned for Season 3 with an expanded vision — meeting audience demand for even greater depth, access, and transparency. Building on the foundation established in earlier seasons, Season 3 marked a significant evolution for the series, growing into full video episodes and further extending the life and impact of each 48 Hours broadcast.

While 48 Hours is bound by television’s limited airtime, Post Mortem gives correspondents and producers the space to unpack the complexities behind each case, from pursuing leads and re-examining evidence to navigating interviews and editorial decisions. Season 3 deepens that access, offering candid insight into the reporting process, the ethical considerations involved, and the emotional toll of covering traumatic events,  delivering a richer perspective on how 48 Hours stories come to life while strengthening audience engagement and trust.

Strategy

Season 3 of 48 Hours: Post Mortem was built to meet an audience appetite that kept growing after the first two seasons: true crime fans wanted more access, more transparency, and more context around how 48 Hours investigations are reported and produced. Because the broadcast is limited by linear airtime, our plan was to extend each story with a companion format that could go deeper into the reporting process while staying anchored to the episode on air.

Our workflow starts with the broadcast case. After each 48 Hours episode is locked, we identify the strongest reporting threads that did not make it to air, including leads that changed the direction of the case, evidence that was re-evaluated, and interviews that shaped the final narrative. From there, we outline a clear arc for the conversation, then book the producers and correspondents closest to the reporting. Hosted by Anne-Marie Green, each episode is designed to deliver both case-specific insight and a broader look at investigative themes, including ethics, accountability, and the emotional impact of covering traumatic events.

This season, we expanded into full video episodes, which added a new layer of immediacy and intimacy while keeping the series grounded in the journalistic standards that define 48 Hours. Video also allowed us to deepen the connection to the franchise and meet audiences where they are, without changing what makes Post Mortem work: candid reporting reflections, thoughtful context, and storytelling that honors the people at the center of each case.

We also extended the Post Mortem world beyond episode companions by creating space for deeper conversations that speak to the true crime audience and the real-world impact of these stories. For example, in a Post Mortem special, Anne-Marie Green sat down with Melissa G. Moore, who learned at 15 that her father was the serial killer known as the Happy Face Killer, alongside Jennifer Cacicio, executive producer of the Paramount+ series inspired by Moore’s story. They discussed Moore’s evolving relationship with her father, the ways trauma can shape identity, and the community she found with other relatives of killers.

What makes Post Mortem unique is that it does not simply recap cases. It opens the door to how the work is done, why decisions are made, and what it feels like to report these stories, creating a richer extension of 48 Hours that deepens engagement and trust.
