Objective

Lighthouse Guild launched Lighthouse Guild AI (LGAI), establishing a new model for accessible innovation that places blind leadership at the center of AI development. The initiative was created to address a longstanding challenge in technology development: products designed for people who are blind or have low vision are too often created without meaningful input from the individuals who will ultimately use them. Meta is the initiative’s first official partner.

Founded on the belief that lived experience should be the driving force behind innovation – not an afterthought – LGAI demonstrates the real-world potential of adaptive technologies that enhance independence, mobility, and inclusion. Our goal was to create a first-of-its-kind framework that brings together blind and low-vision individuals, accessibility experts, and leading technology companies to collaboratively develop and refine AI-powered solutions. Through this model, we sought to ensure that emerging technologies are practical, effective, and responsive to the blind and low-vision community’s real-world needs.

LGAI was also designed to showcase the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in everyday life –  from navigation and awareness of one’s surroundings, through to reading and independent living. The initiative's impact is already being demonstrated through its partnership with Meta, which recently announced a nationwide effort to provide free Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses and hands-on training to more than 130,000 legally blind veterans across the United States. Lighthouse Guild is supporting the program by helping ensure veterans can effectively use the technology to increase their independence and quality of life.

Ultimately, LGAI seeks to reshape how adaptive technology is created — proving that when innovation is guided by the communities it serves, it can deliver more impactful, equitable, and empowering outcomes.

Strategy

Lighthouse Guild AI (LGAI) was created to address a fundamental gap in technology development: adaptive technologies for people who are blind or have low vision are often designed without meaningful input from the people who use them. Our goal was to reverse that model by placing blind leadership at the center of innovation and creating a framework where individuals with lived experience help shape technology from concept to implementation.

To bring this vision to life, Lighthouse Guild launched LGAI as a dedicated initiative focused on co-developing adaptive technologies alongside leading technology partners. We established a collaborative process that combined the expertise of engineers, developers, and accessibility specialists with the real-world experiences of blind and low-vision users. Meta joined as LGAI’s first official partner, providing an opportunity to test and refine AI-powered smart glasses through direct feedback from the community they were intended to serve.

A defining moment in the project came during the 2026 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon, when Lighthouse Guild President and CEO Thomas Panek, who is blind, completed the race using AI glasses with enhanced software developed through collaboration between Meta and LGAI. The technology provided unprompted real-time information built around the needs of a blind runner, including information about the race environment, including navigation cues and key landmarks, demonstrating how AI can expand independence and situational awareness when designed with blind users at the center.

One of the greatest challenges was ensuring that the technology addressed practical, everyday needs rather than theoretical use cases. Traditional development models often treat accessibility as an afterthought. We overcame this by embedding blind leadership throughout the process, allowing users to identify priorities, test prototypes, and guide refinements. Another challenge was proving the technology’s effectiveness in dynamic, real-world environments. The half marathon served as a high-profile, real-world demonstration that pushed the technology beyond controlled testing conditions and provided valuable insights for future development.

What makes LGAI unique is not only the technology itself, but the model behind it. Rather than designing for the blind and low-vision community, we are designing with them. By centering lived experience, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and focusing on practical applications such as navigation, travel, and obstacle detection, LGAI is creating a new standard for adaptive technology development — one that empowers greater independence while ensuring innovation is driven by the people it is meant to serve.

Results

Lighthouse Guild AI (LGAI) successfully demonstrated that accessible technology is most effective when people who are blind or have low vision are directly involved in its development. Through a groundbreaking partnership with Meta, LGAI established a framework that placed blind leadership and lived experience at the center of AI innovation.

The initiative showcased the real-world potential of adaptive technology when Lighthouse Guild President and CEO Thomas Panek participated in the 2026 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon using AI-powered smart glasses. By providing environmental awareness and navigation support in a dynamic race setting, the technology demonstrated how AI can enhance independence, mobility and confidence for people with vision loss.

LGAI’s impact extended beyond its launch, helping inspire Meta’s effort to donate more than 130,000 pairs of AI-powered smart glasses to blind veterans across the United States this year, with Lighthouse Guild supporting the program as a partner.

LGAI also elevated the national conversation around developing technology with—not just for—the disability community. Coverage across ABC World News Tonight, Runner’s World, NPR’s Here & Now, Men’s Journal and amNewYork generated more than 32 million earned media impressions and showcased the partnership’s nationwide impact.
