LGBTQ Herstory Month 2025 (RuPaul’s Drag Race)

Entered in LGBTQ+, YouTube

Objective

Now in its fifth year, LGBTQ Herstory Month has become an annual celebration of queer excellence, honoring the trailblazers whose artistry and activism have shaped LGBTQ+ history and culture. The October 2025 campaign continued that tradition by spotlighting legendary pageant queens from the RuPaul's Drag Race franchise, recognizing pageantry’s place in queer history.

Rather than creating a traditional awareness campaign, we set out to produce evergreen content that educates as much as it entertains. Through intimate interviews, original photography, and a month-long social content rollout, we explored the mentorship, resilience, and sense of community that define pageant culture while giving audiences a deeper understanding of the artists behind the performances.

Our objectives were threefold: to honor the legacy of iconic pageant queens and their contributions to LGBTQ+ history; to educate both longtime fans and new audiences about pageantry's place in queer history; and to inspire reflection, conversation, and celebration throughout LGBTQ History Month. Beyond driving engagement, we also sought to create a lasting digital archive that preserves these stories for future generations, reinforcing RuPaul's Drag Race's ongoing commitment to celebrating the diverse voices that have shaped its legacy.

Strategy

The success of 2025's LGBTQ Herstory Month relied on thoughtful planning, meticulous production, and a creative strategy that balanced education with entertainment. From the outset, our goal was to create content that felt both cinematic and deeply personal while producing enough assets to sustain engagement throughout an entire month.

The campaign centered around six legendary pageant queens from the RuPaul's Drag Race franchise—an ambitious feat given the complexity of coordinating their schedules. Bringing this caliber of talent together in a single location required months of planning across talent, production, and creative teams. Their enthusiasm for the campaign's mission made it possible, as each queen recognized the importance of preserving and celebrating drag history.

Location was equally intentional. We selected the historic United Palace Theater, whose grand architecture evoked the legacy and prestige of pageantry while providing a visually striking backdrop worthy of the queens' stories. To further elevate the campaign, we partnered with acclaimed queer photographer Erik Carter to create a collection of editorial portraits, individual character studies, and an iconic ensemble image that became the visual centerpiece of the campaign.

Building on lessons from the previous years' LGBTQ Herstory Month campaigns, we refined our production schedule to maximize efficiency and creativity. By integrating photography, long-form interviews, and short-form social capture into a single production day, we generated a robust library of content that could be rolled out across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other social platforms throughout the month.

The interviews themselves became the heart of the campaign. Rather than relying on promotional talking points, we created space for genuine conversations about mentorship, legacy, and the pageant traditions that shaped modern drag. The queens reflected on the pioneers who paved the way for them, transforming the project from a celebratory photoshoot into an oral history of queer culture.

By combining premium visual storytelling with authentic, educational conversations, LGBTQ Herstory Month became more than a social campaign. It created an enduring record of an important chapter in LGBTQ+ history while engaging audiences in a format designed for today's digital platforms.

Results

LGBTQ Herstory Month successfully achieved its goal of celebrating, educating, and engaging audiences through a campaign that resonated far beyond its initial launch. The campaign debuted in partnership with OUT Magazine, amplifying its reach and positioning the project within a trusted LGBTQ+ media space. The release of the iconic group portrait and behind-the-scenes feature generated an overwhelmingly positive response, with fans praising the campaign for honoring drag legends and spotlighting an often-overlooked chapter of queer history.

Throughout October 2025, the campaign maintained momentum with a steady rollout of original content across the RuPaul's Drag Race digital ecosystem, including exclusive portraits, interviews, and social-first video. Each of the six featured queens shared the content with their own audiences, extending the campaign's reach organically and sparking conversations across platforms.

The campaign amassed more than 176,000 cumulative views, generated extensive fan engagement and commentary, and reinforced RuPaul's Drag Race as a platform that not only entertains but also preserves and celebrates LGBTQ+ history. Beyond the metrics, its greatest success was creating a lasting digital archive that documented the stories of legendary pageant queens, ensuring their influence and contributions remain accessible to current audiences and future generations.
