In 2021, FOX Entertainment launched the world’s first-ever avatar singing competition series. Using the latest in real-time motion capture technology, this truly ground-breaking series merged talent & technology allowing 20 performers to reinvent themselves as digital avatars. These transformations gave the contestants ahuge boost in confidence and a way to express themselves in the most diverse ways.
To bring these digital avatars to life across social, Fox Marketing needed to step into new creative territory. We teamed up with virtual production specialist SILVER SPOON to mount a real-time performance capture shoot of our backstage talent, leveraging Unreal Engine to relay the motion information to control both the avatar’s body & facial performances in real time. So while our contestants were performing off camera, their avatars on stage were mimicking their every move.
To kick-off our social media campaign, our digital avatars stepped out of the shadows to give the world a glimpse of their unique talents, as well as a clue to their personalities. From flaming hair to glowing tattoos to the ability to fly, there was no limitation to our contestants’ creativity when it came to expressing their personalities in a unique way.
As we headed into premiere week, it was finally time to reveal our Alter Egos! In these posts, our contestants took center stage and magically transformed into their digital avatars right before our very eyes. By combining special shoot and motion capture footage with motion graphics and special effects we truly gave our contestants the ultimate reveal.
Even our star-studded Judges: Nick Lachey, Grimes, Alanis Morissette and Will.I.Am, surprised fans by getting in on the action and sharing their own Alter Ego transformations.
While FOX embraced the creative power of the METAVERSE for all it’s fans, the fans embraced Alter Ego and made it TV’s #1 New Unscripted Series of 2021.
