Over a decade ago, The Washington Post launched its column “The Fact Checker” in order to call out politicians spreading falsehoods. Over time, they began handing out Pinocchios, with the biggest lies garnering four Pinocchios. Reporter Michelle Ye Hee Lee began working on the column in 2014, bringing its reporting to Snapchat and creating its popular gif-filled email newsletter. In October 2017, she moved to the paper’s political enterprise and investigations team. She now focuses on money and ethics in politics, enlightening not just her readers, but 27K+ Twitter followers about the many troubling ways corruption seeps into the political system. She still has a keen eye for lies, continuing to hand out Pinocchios to whoever earns them on her @myhlee Twitter feed, as well.
