To promote the first season of Zach Galifiankis' offbeat new comedy, Baskets, FX wanted to artfully introduce each of the major characters in a unique way. The idea was to showcase the show's signature combination of both high and low brow – (for example juxtaposing the titular screw up of a clown from Bakersfield, CA who trained in the artistry of clowning in Paris) in a still graphic asset.
Using art from the FX print team as inspiration, FX set out to recreate simple and memorable moments from the season in the style of an impressionist painter. Whether it was Chip frozen in time moments before he is run down by the rodeo bull, Christine integrated into Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, Eddie drinking from his toilet bowl mug (while sitting in a giant toilet bowl) or Martha literally becoming a door mat, each graphic aimed to give you a sense of the character in an artistic way…giving the audience a taste of what was to come from both the characters and the series.
The artistic character cards drew the eye of both fans of Baskets and those who were simply curious about the show. The unique artistic style stopped fans in their tracks as they scrolled through their feed, and helped spur conversation around each character.
