Skyscraper-sized murals; harrowing installation art; a short film about Ellis Island starring Robert De Niro: JR uses Instagram to showcase his new works and process. A self-titled photograffeur, he specializes in installed black-and-white portraiture, plastering walls, hallways, city sidewalks, and whole buildings with faces. Many of his projects feature immigrants, victims of natural disasters, or various raw portraits of regular people and can be found in Tokyo, Times Square, Paris, and Los Angeles and—they’re rarely removed. While many public art projects become too innocuous to make an impact, JR is famous for murals that unanimously please and tell stories unique to their location.
