It Gets Better Project is a nonprofit organization with a mission to uplift, empower, and connect LGBTQ+ youth. With our mission in mind, we're constantly thinking about ways to ensure that LGBTQ+ young folks from varying backgrounds can see themselves within our content.
AAPI& is an Instagram series we created to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month this year. It follows our Black& series for Black History Month and Hispanic& series for Hispanic Heritage Month.
For this series, we included a mix of influencers, artists, and our very own Youth Voices, who are 13-19 year old youth ambassadors for the organization.
First we tapped Reeta Loi - a storyteller, artist, and Buddhist to speak to their experience in intersecting identities of AAPI & LGBTQ communities.
Then we asked celebrity chef, Kristen Kish to give advice to queer and questioning LGBTQ+ youth which resonated deeply with our audience. "My advice to queer AAPI youth is that it’s okay not to know right now. You don’t have to have it all figured out and only present yourself in the way that others are presenting themselves. You’re allowed to change course, to evolve. That’s the beauty of being a human being." 💜
Next we highlighted Dosa Cat, the South Asian drag queen who found empowerment through Kathak, the traditional Indian dance form, and now incorporates it into her drag!
Lastly, we tapped to of our Youth Voices to speak to their experiences as young LGBTQ+ teens making their marks on the world.
Across all four videos, we received 43,800+ views on Instagram's platform. With stills and videos combined, we garnered over 2200 likes with 40 comments.
