Since 1996, schools across the country have earned over $934 million for educational resources through the Box Tops for Education program. In 2019, Box Tops for Education made it easier than ever for anyone to participate by updating the entry mechanic from clipping Box Tops on product packaging to scanning receipts through their app. The app instantly identifies participating products and adds cash to the school’s earnings online.
Since The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s inception, Ellen has been committed to honoring and supporting teachers who are shaping our future generation. In celebration of the launch of the Box Tops for Education app combined with ELLEN’s mission to support teachers, together we shined a light on teachers going above and beyond for their students and communities and honored them during 2020 Teacher Appreciation Week.
The ELLEN & Box Tops for Education program came to life with a series of Human Interest Featured Integrations on The Ellen DeGeneres Show centered around teachers facing one of the biggest challenges they have ever experienced, COVID-19. Over the course of several integration hits, we shared stories of teachers going above and beyond to stay connected to their students through distance learning.
The first hit featured 6th grade Social Studies teacher Victoria Bay, who wrote a letter to over 100 of her own students after finding out that school had ended for the year due to the pandemic without the chance to say a proper goodbye. Next up was Ruben Caceres, a special education teacher at a Title 1 middle school who used his stimulus check to make masks for his students and their families. And finally, viewers were introduced to Peter Limata, a first grade teacher at a Title 1 elementary school, who gained the attention of not only his students in quarantine, but also kids around the world by reading books to children over Zoom. He spends money out of pocket to benefit his students and helps support his family in Zambia. Each of these teachers were rewarded $25,000 from The Show and Box Tops for Education so that they can continue their amazing efforts.
The celebration continued with even more shoutouts on The Show where Ellen shined a light on even more stories of teachers going above and beyond for their students and communities. Through a series of smaller hits, including surprising 100 teachers with gift cards to help them buy supplies for their classrooms, together ELLEN & Box Tops for Education helped this incredible group.
