Objectives

Although approximately 57.9 percent of U.S. citizen adult Latinos were registered to vote at the time of the 2014 election, only 47.2 percent turned out to vote. The registration and turnout rates are approximately 10 percent lower than those of non-Hispanic blacks and 18 percent lower than those of non-Hispanic whites. To help register, inform, and empower Hispanic America to vote in the 2018 elections and to encourage others to do so also, Univision launched our Vota Conmigo campaign starting in October 2018.

Strategy and Execution

The message of Vota Conmigo was created by five of Univision’s summer interns at Univision Los Angeles and was adopted by the company as part of its national campaign to ensure that the Hispanic community was counted during the 2018 midterm election and that Latino voters had a substantial impact on races where they represented a significant portion of the electorate. As Hispanic America’s leading media company, Univision is uniquely positioned to contribute to and amplify the work of organizations dedicated to helping ensure eligible Hispanic voters continue to turn out and are accounted for in every major election.

Results

Partnering with the National Association of Latino Elected Appointed Officials (NALEO), Mi Familia Vota, and other community leaders, Univision successfully executed a multifaceted campaign which encouraged eligible residents to become citizens, encouraged those not registered to register to vote, and encouraged all eligible voters to vote and to encourage friends, family, and others to vote as well. Joining forces with NALEO, Univision stations across the country hosted phone banks to answer questions related to how to vote, where to vote, and any other relevant inquiry. Univision hosted four “parties at the polls” in order to get Hispanic America excited about voting. Univision recorded and aired various local and national Public Service Announcements with our talent stressing the importance of voting. The Vota Conmigo campaign was successful in reaching the Hispanic community. 70% of all calls received by NALEO’s 1-888-VE Y VOTA hotline originated due to Univision programming. Univision produced and distributed more than 100 pieces of original content developed specifically for this campaign which generated more than 42,504 page views, and 372,602 video views. Univision published over 500 social media posts on all Univision social media properties. 1,417 posts were shared on Twitter with the #VotaConmigo hashtag, gathering 9.6 million impressions. 1,500 attendees joined four Party at the Polls events in Atlanta, Dallas, Fresno and Phoenix to promote voting and over 150 clips from various Univision affiliates were gathered.
