Based on current extinction rates, scientists and conservationists have warned that we are heading towards a massive extinction, the likes of which have not been seen on Earth for over 65 million years. If such an event were to occur, it would be disastrous, widespread and essentially irreversible. It would take anywhere from ten to thirty million years for life to recover to its current state, over 100 times as long as humans have been on this planet.
The causes of this mass extinction are widespread, but include pollution, deforestation, mining, hunting and climate change. The first step in halting these processes is to become aware of the destruction that is happening. The Vanishing animation series hopes to raise awareness of this issue of extinction by highlighting the threats that different species face. Change can start one person at the time.
Using statistics on population size, habitat loss and animal behavior, we create a narrative for each highlighted species, exploring the reasons that they are at risk, and what can be done to keep them save. The hope is to raise awareness around these endangered species, and encouraged conservation efforts and more conscious living. The series is published in both English and Spanish, so as to reach a wider range of viewers. Using playful animation, concise text, reliable statistics and calming music, we've created a set of videos that are both easy to watch and educational.
Additionally, our community outreach involved contacting organizations and influencers to assist in amplifying each video's reach so as to raise awareness of homelessness outside of Fusion's immediate audience base.
The Vanishing Series has exceeded our expectations and goals. The videos have raised awareness regarding the endangered species featured to both an English language and Spanish language audience, and has received tremendous engagement and viewership with the three episodes garnering over 1M views.
Additionally, we received incredible pick-up from a number of organizations and influencers to amplify the message of our series, including shares from PETA, Big Cat Rescue, Jane Goodall Institute, WildAid, Endangered Special Coaltion, World Animal Foundation, Orangutan Foundation International, and LOTL Rescue.
