Objectives

Following disasters and crises there is often a lack of temporary accommodation for those survivors displaced or relief workers who have deployed to support the response.

Airbnb's disaster response tool directly aligns with our core business strategy of providing temporary accommodations and engaging our community of hosts. In this specific initiative our hosts are opening their homes to share with neighbors impacted or relief workers who have come to support their community in a time of need.

Strategy and Execution

By activating our hosts through our disaster response tool, we have had thousands of hosts open their homes following disasters around the world. We have responded to natural disasters including the recent Canada Wildfires and Japan Earthquake to the recent terrorist attacks in both Brussels and Paris. Additionally, we have expanded this program to include donation of travel credits (financial donation from Airbnb) to non profit organizations for their relief workers where our "tool" may not be activated. Most successfully, we have been supporting the Refugee Response where hundreds of relief workers have and continue to be accommodated in our hosts homes in Lesvos, Kos and Serbia.

Results

• Thousands of hosts have opened their homes
• Hundreds of survivors displaced and relief workers have been accommodated
• Hosts have become a local resource for the relief workers responding in places like Ecuador and Nepal
• Hosts have become local volunteers alongside the relief workers responding in places like Nepal
• Often when hotels are not available, Airbnb listings are the perfect solution (and often the only option in places like the Island of Dominica)
