We set out to break the mold when it comes to SpongeBob content, and we did just that with Pineapple Playhouse. It’s the first ever Bikini Bottom content executed entirely with original and lifelike puppets. Adding to the fun/practical experience of the series are eye-popping sets and props that are all handmade. Produced with an indie film spirit, the first episode of Pineapple Playhouse was produced, shot, and edited at a producer’s home during the height of the pandemic. After seeing the quick success of our pilot episode, we quickly greenlit further episodes, each with even more daring and unique puppets/props.
The strategy for the series (like most of our SpongeBob content) was to take the SpongeBob moments and scenes you love and reimagine them in a completely different way. Using beautiful and bespoke puppets, we shined a new light on the classic series and presented familiar show moments as if they were debuted for the first time. Additionally, we aimed to build retention building moments or rewind scenes by using elaborate props to surprise fans who know the series like the back of their hands. For instance, we created a beating plastic heart prop to highlight a particularly memorable moment from the show. This unexpected prop turned out to be a scene/moment that kept viewers rewinding back and watching again and again.
Pineapple Playhouse quickly became a winning channel franchise with most episodes exceeding a million views. Since its initial publication, the series has become a main staple on our channel as we continue the process of producing a second season of the series.
