Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head Nacho Stunt

Entered in Event & Experiential

Objectives

Beavis & Butt-head are back! Nearly three decades since the dynamic duo of dumbasess first appeared on TV, Beavis & Butt-Head returned with a new movie and series, but… ugh…this time, they’re like…ugh…"streaming”, or something...

To promote the return of the iconic adult animation franchise, Paramount+ not only needed to re-energize a dormant fanbase, but we also needed to educate fans – in less than 2 months -- that, unlike the original series that is synonymous with MTV, this modern revival would be streaming exclusively on Paramount+. So we set out to come up with a ridiculously over-the-top promotional stunt that only the boys would be stupid enough to try that would not only get fans buzzing about their return but would also educate them on the new destination by establishing a link between the franchise and Paramount+ that couldn’t be ignored.

Strategy and Execution

As a global streaming service, Paramount+ needed the world to know that the boys were back, so what better way to let the entire world know, than by breaking a Guinness World Record! Given their love of nachos we set out to ensure that "Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head" on Paramount+ would go down in the history books together to celebrate their return.

The stunt was held at Smorgasburg LA, a weekly open-air market of small businesses curated from the next wave of SoCal’s food scene. We built a custom stage and 15 feet wide “nacho boat” that was fully branded in Paramount+’s signature “peak blue” color palette to reinforce brand linkage.

We partnered with local organizations to source all ingredients in an effort to help promote their businesses on a bigger platform in addition to helping them make up lost wages from the impact of the pandemic. Everything from our chips to the salsa bar will be high quality and authentic to LA! The nachos were prepared by local culinary school students who also helped distribute them to Smorgasburg LA patrons once the record was broken.

At the end of the event, any nachos that were not served were distributed in foil pans to individuals in need through local food banks and homeless shelters. An official Guinness representative was also on-site to monitor, inspect, and certify the results and upon breaking the record, she awarded life-size cutouts of Beavis and Butt-head the official record-breaking certificate.

Results

Paramount+ made the largest serving of nachos in history.

The activation took place at Smorgasburg LA, a weekly open-air market of small businesses curated from the next wave of SoCal’s food, beverage and shopping scene.

A team of 17 people created the massive order of nachos whose final weight of chips, cheese, and ground beef was some 4,870 pounds — as much as a juvenile killer whale, and enough to land "Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head" and Paramount+ in the record books. A Guinness representative was present for the creation of the nachos and officially recognized the record-breaking snack order.

The revival has earned rave reviews and boasts a 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
