The objective was to create an evocative film about the soul of free diving and to pull the target audience into an immersive underwater world, while presenting the signature REC45 cold water wetsuit. For us the eerie but beautiful underwater world inside California's kelp forest presented the perfect backdrop to present our definition of the unique sport and achieve set goals.
By far the biggest challenge for us was the tiny budget and resulting limitations in timing. It was March when we were in pre-production and the less than ideal conditions underwater around that time of the year required us to monitor the potentially best window for the two days we were able to budget for. We had to hit the ground running once locations had been scouted and ended up with acceptable conditions, meaning underwater visibility mainly, on just one out of the two days we had budgeted for. Sven still had to set up a pick-up shoot in a pool in Burbank and edit a few shots on the computer to see his vision come to life.
Taking all obstacles along our way, some of which we described above, has paid off. The clients were very happy about the results and the film has been received very well so far.
