Collaborating with Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Lucasfilm, our goal was to create a Deathstar hologram that anyone could build at home using their mobile device and common items. We wanted the construction to be fun, simple, and a distinctly Star Wars.
At the center of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the Deathstar plans are a huge part of the universe as a whole. We wanted to bring that digital asset to life by placing it in the physical world, directly in the hands of fans. First, we created the hologram using film assets and a simple prism technique to achieve the effect. Next, we made simple instructions in the style of a Deathstar blueprint with fun copy that helped fans lose themselves in the Star Wars experience. To promote the piece, we created a social video outlined the ease and simplicity of the process along with the amazing final product.
The DIY Deathstar was a simple to construct hologram that brought the world of Star Wars to life. It made one of the most iconic parts of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as the entire Star Wars saga, a real world item that fans could construct at home.
