Good360 and Tempur-Pedic work together to donate mattresses for those in need

Entered in Business-NGO

Objectives

As the global leader in product philanthropy and purposeful giving, Good360 partners with socially responsible companies to source highly needed goods and distribute them through our network of diverse nonprofits that support people in need. One of our most important partnerships is with Tempur Sealy International, Inc. (TSI), the world's largest bedding provider and a well-known family of brands that combines a proud history with groundbreaking innovation in sleep and relaxation products.

Seven years ago, TSI joined forces with Good360 to help maximize the company's social impact potential through a mattress donation program that is both far-reaching in terms of the organizations it supports and that delivers significant value to those in need, along with the nonprofit organizations that support them.

Using sustainable and responsible practices, the TSI donation team builds high-quality mattresses to make available to charitable organizations. Good360 identifies impactful recipients from their network of more than 60,000 nonprofits and facilitates all donation logistics, compliance, and impact reporting and storytelling. This partnership has delivered over 40,000 mattresses to hundreds of nonprofits since the program began and has delivered 13,315 in the last 12 months alone.

Our joint goals for the Good360/Tempur Sealy International Mattress Donation Program are to:

Strategy and Execution

The long-standing partnership between Good360 and TSI has allowed us to jointly serve the needs of tens of thousands of individuals in need. This donation program's success is based on the strategic approach both organizations have taken to maximize social impact:

Identify the need and find a solution to an issue:
Restorative sleep is a universal human need. Mattresses and sleep products are consistently a high need in Good360's network of nonprofit members; however, a high-quality mattress like those produced by TSI is out of reach for most nonprofit organizations and the individuals they serve. Understanding this, TSI set out to develop custom-built mattresses created from excess inventory and to distribute them to qualified nonprofit organizations serving a range of social missions. Good360 is uniquely equipped to identify, vet and approve eligible nonprofits and can provide the logistics support to distribute the mattresses where they are needed most.

Structure a partnership based on the pillar of mutualism:

At Good360, we believe that philanthropic giving is most effective when based on a value of mutualism. In this way, we create a giving ecosystem where all stakeholders benefit by working together in support of a broader goal. In the TSI mattress donation program, we are solving a challenge for TSI where they have a viable outlet for the responsible distribution of excess inventory. We are making a highly needed (and high quality) product available to people in need and the nonprofits that serve them, and we are reducing waste by finding homes for items that might otherwise go to waste.

Develop processes and procedures for transparency and accountability:

The Good360 and TSI teams work closely throughout the year to manage the mattress donation program. TSI can maintain focus on its corporate social responsibility goals while relying on Good360 to handle all day-to-day program details. Good360 vets nonprofit recipient organizations to ensure they meet TSI standards and we communicate with those groups about how the program works, eliminating the need for TSI to field hundreds of inquiries themselves. We also manage the donation request queue, shipping and distribution of the mattresses, and the development of impact stories that highlight how the donated mattresses are used and by whom.

Distribute mattresses where they are needed most:

Good360 handles all the final mile delivery to nonprofits from the TSI donation center. It begins with the high-quality product that TSI and its teams in Arizona, Indiana, and Texas create. Applicants are screened for their ability and intent to receive, store, and distribute to individuals in need through an efficient and secure process. Qualified organizations represent a wide spectrum of social causes, including homeless veterans, disadvantaged children, disaster recovery, and general wellness for unde-rserved populations.

Share the good

TSI consumers and our associates want to know about the good that TSI is doing in the community. To that end, Good360provides stories and materials that can be easily disseminated via social media channels telling the story of those we have been fortunate enough to support.

Results

In 2017, we distributed 14,000+ mattresses and are forecast to distribute another 13,000 in 2018. Over the last 12 months alone, these donations supported the local community service efforts of more than 64 nonprofits.

TSI also supported Good360's long-term disaster recovery work over the past year by sending 28 truckloads of mattresses in support of hurricane recovery in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico and wild fire recovery in California.

The impact is best communicated by testimonials from the recipient organizations, for example:

Toy Box Connection: "One of our veterans told us that for ten years, he hadn't had a good night's sleep. Now with his new mattress, he's been sleeping peacefully every night! Imagine his story times 200! That is the impact this donation has had on our community."

United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF): "UBCF supports our clients both physically and emotionally, including facilitating a good night's sleep with help from Tempur-Pedic, which is so important to our clients' well-being. Thanks to our partnership with Good360 and Tempur-Pedic, we continue to truly make a positive, lasting impact in the lives of so many deserving people."

Native American Heritage Association (NAHA): "The families who received a new mattress and frame were very appreciative. The struggles and hardship of our Indian people's survival usually goes unnoticed to life off the reservation. We are humble, grateful and honored to be volunteers for and work with organizations who make great contributions to give our Indian people a hand up. Thank you!"
