Science Behind Sleep

Entered in Video Series

Objective

Headspace partnered with Hyatt to create the "Science Behind Sleep" video series, designed to help guests and members improve sleep quality through expert-backed, science-based guidance. Combining Headspace’s mental health expertise with Hyatt’s commitment to wellbeing, the series provides actionable tips to tackle common travel-related sleep challenges.

Travel often disrupts sleep routines, and research shows that three in four travelers prioritize sleep quality during trips. This series directly addresses these challenges, blending cutting-edge sleep research with practical solutions. Filmed at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, the series features Headspace's Dora Kamau and renowned Sleep Expert Dr. Aric Prather, ensuring the content is both relatable and scientifically grounded.

Each of the five episodes focuses on a specific issue, such as managing jet lag, creating a travel bedtime routine, and dealing with nighttime wake-ups. The content is designed to empower travelers with simple, effective strategies for better rest.

To ensure accessibility, the series is available on guestroom TVs at nearly 400 Hyatt properties and in the Headspace app, making it easy for guests to engage with the content during their stay.

This collaboration goes beyond traditional hospitality offerings, delivering a resource that enhances sleep quality while traveling and equips travelers with tools to improve their overall wellbeing long after their trip ends.

Strategy

Our goal was to create a meaningful resource to address a universal travel challenge: poor sleep. Combining Hyatt’s commitment to guest wellbeing with Headspace’s expertise in mental health and sleep science, we developed the "Science Behind Sleep" video series to help travelers rest better and feel refreshed.

Research guided our approach, with a Hyatt survey revealing that 75% of travelers prioritize sleep quality. Based on these insights, we identified common travel sleep challenges, such as jet lag, nighttime wake-ups, and disrupted routines, and designed a five-episode video series to address these issues. The series was developed with expertise from Headspace’s Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher Dora Kamau and Sleep Expert Dr. Aric Prather. Filmed at the serene Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, the series reflected the calming and restful experience we aimed to deliver to viewers.

Each episode tackled a specific challenge, such as using morning sunlight to reset the body’s internal clock or creating a travel bedtime routine. The content was designed to be digestible, blending practical tips with easy-to-understand scientific insights to empower travelers to take control of their sleep. The series launched across multiple platforms to ensure accessibility. It was made available on guestroom TVs at nearly 400 Hyatt hotels, within the Headspace app, and on Hyatt’s YouTube channel. This multi-platform approach ensured guests and members could engage with the content in ways that fit their routines.

One challenge was ensuring the series resonated with a diverse audience. We addressed this by focusing on concise, actionable episodes that offered simple solutions while maintaining scientific accuracy. Another challenge was integrating the series seamlessly into the travel experience. By leveraging in-room TVs and the Headspace app, we made the content easily accessible when and where travelers needed it most.

This project stands out because it merges Hyatt’s hospitality expertise with Headspace’s authority in mental health and wellness. The series goes beyond traditional hotel amenities, offering practical, science-backed solutions to improve sleep. It’s not just about helping travelers during their stay—it’s about equipping them with tools to improve their sleep habits long after their trip ends.

Results

The "Science Behind Sleep" series made a meaningful impact by addressing one of the biggest challenges travelers face: getting quality sleep.
