A Drag Adventure Story with Trixie Mattel and Juno Birch

Entered in Comedy Video, LGBTQ Community Engagement, YouTube Partnership

Objective

A Drag Adventure Story was created to cement YouTube as a vibrant and immersive platform for diverse storytelling by celebrating the evolution of drag culture. The project aimed to showcase drag’s rich history, its present-day impact, and its future potential in an engaging and cinematic way. By amplifying the voices of drag creators and reinforcing YouTube as a home for inclusive, groundbreaking content, the initiative sought to honor both the artistry and influence of the drag community.

Drag has long been an art form rooted in live performance, but its digital evolution has expanded its reach beyond underground ballrooms to global audiences. YouTube has become a central stage for drag, where iconic performances, tutorials, and discussions have built a thriving community. Over the past year alone, drag-related content has generated over 2 billion views and 65,000 new uploads, proving its lasting cultural significance. Recognizing this, the team sought to create a piece that would serve as both a time capsule and a celebration—one that reflects drag’s deep-rooted history while embracing its ever-expanding presence on YouTube.

Strategy

A Drag Adventure Story is a vibrant mini-documentary infused with narrative storytelling, following renowned drag icons Trixie Mattel and Juno Birch on an inter-dimensional journey through drag history. The film explores the art form’s evolution from underground ballrooms to mainstream media, highlighting its undeniable impact on pop culture.

The creative execution blended live-action, green screen production, animation, and deep-cut references to YouTube’s drag archives. The film paid homage to defining moments such as Lady Bunny’s Strawberry Shortcut and Tandi Iman Dupree’s legendary Holding Out for a Hero performance, while also featuring contributions from celebrated drag superstars including Bob the Drag Queen, Plastique Tiara, and Pabllo Vittar.

The production was an ambitious three-month endeavor, culminating in a tightly executed shoot day followed by extensive post-production and animation. The project’s success relied on seamlessly integrating various formats—traditional filming, green screen work, and animated sequences—demanding a high level of precision. The creative team worked closely with specialized editors and animators to ensure a polished yet playful aesthetic that captured the theatricality of drag.

Beyond the technical execution, authenticity was at the heart of the project. The film was shaped by first-hand perspectives from the drag community and a diverse creative team spanning different ages, genders, ethnicities, and identities—including LGBTQ+ and AAPI representation. As Senior Creative Producer Sele Leota reflected, “Growing up, I watched Fa’afafine beauty pageants in Samoa—celebrations of self-expression and identity. To now be part of a project that highlights drag’s evolution on a global scale is truly special.”
