Born from an artistic concept by Volta and developed by BKOM Studios for the purposes of the game, Sunday Gold's art style is an important part of what sets the game apart. From its stylized characters bursting with personality, to each hand-painted environment that helps tell the incredible story of a dystopian futuristic world, the game's art direction speaks loudly for itself and brings an incredible immersive experience from its very first cinematic. From the start, the artistic direction of Sunday Gold aimed for something special. From hand-painted environments that draw on the nostalgia of old "point and click" graphical adventure games, to expressive character designs, to dramatic cartoon-style animations, we were always on the lookout for a distinctive signature.
We approached the art direction of this game by focusing on the consistency of layered styles, and letting the art tell the story where necessary. There is a wide variety of styles between character portraits, environments, streamlined modeling, and comic book style art. So we needed to establish an art process to use the right art style depending on the situation in the game. When it comes to art, the best innovation is in how we built the environments. In fact, it may not be noticeable to players, but all environments are 3D with overlaid artwork. This allows characters to move through environments and take into account the placement of furniture, while interacting with hand-painted objects. Thanks to this, we were able to maintain a textured style even in 3D space, which makes Sunday Gold stand out among similar games.
