Objectives

"Being transgender at work" is an in-depth article published in November 2021 on the lived experience of transgender employees in corporate America. The article builds on proprietary McKinsey research on how the LGBTQ+ community fares in the workplace, employee surveys, interviews, and external research. The article is aimed at US companies looking to improve the experience of all employees, and in terms of reach was promoted broadly, as a piece of distinctive research contributing to the external conversation, as well as shared with organizations and leaders looking to improve their efforts. 

Strategy and Execution

The article accelerates LGBTQ+ acceptance by elevating the experience of transgender employees to a pressing management issue deserving of the attention given to other diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. It aims to put real data behind experiences that otherwise might be treated as anecdotal, as a means of identifying the most meaningful issues to improve transgender workers' experience.
