SYFY WIRE 360 & 180 Series

Entered in 360 Video

Objectives

SYFY WIRE extended it's comic con coverage by inviting users at home to experiene the event themselves in 360 & 180 degrees. Througout 2018, SYFY WIRE visited Seattle's Emerald City Comic Con, Chicago's C2E2, San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con - producing over 15, 360 & 180 degree videos for desktop & mobile (YouTube and Facebook 360), but also presented in stereocopic 3D via all major VR platforms, including Google Daydream, Oculus, HTC Vive and Playstation VR.

Strategy and Execution

Our goal was to offer our viewers a way to experience these cons like never before. Many don't get to experience these events first had, and we felt presenting in 360/180 was the next best thing. With our productions, we wanted to make sure we captured the event, but also placed a focus on the con-goers themselves. We aimed to celebrate cosplayer's creativity and capture their love for fandom. Videos like "Cosplay Dance Party", "Hide-And-Go-Geek", "Sidekick Search" and "Three Questions" - all strived to celebrate the passion and creativity of the fans. To achieve that sense of presence, it was vital to shoot in stereoscopic 3D. Using a new VR medium like 180 video achieved this, bringing the user directly into the action.

Results

Our videoes were well recieved by fans and VR enthusiests alike. Never before had a news organization covered these types of events in this medium, on this scale.
