Biography

The Horniman Museum and Gardens are an inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free attraction in South London’s Forest Hill. The Horniman has been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, the collections has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of Anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed Aquarium and Natural History collection. Unusually for such an important museum, you can see the collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects. Visitors come time and again to explore the free museum, take part in our activities and enjoy our 16-acre gardens. And they discover something fascinating and mesmerising every time.

How do you or your organization use social media? What makes your use unique?

The Horniman Museum and Gardens are active across all social media platforms: On Twitter and Facebook, the Horniman shares news, behind the scenes stories and information about upcoming events and exhibitions, as well as updates on current projects and highlights from the fascinating world pf the stores. On Instagram and Flickr, we share photographs showing what's happening at the Horniman, from the behind the scenes painting of a pangolin, to an exhibition installation or a class of schoolchildren exploring our nature trail. The Horniman was one of the first UK museums to start using Pinterest, collating boards on the themes of the collections - Natural History, Anthropology, musical instruments, archives, and gardens. The Horniman's Tumblr account shares fascinating, unusual and wonderful objects being found in the stores - it has been massively successful, gaining 20,000 followers in just over a year.
