"Law and Batting Order" is a video blog created and hosted by New York Law School graduate Tony Iliakostas. The central objective of LABO is to discuss legal developments in sports in plain English for anyone to understand, whether you're a lawyer or just a die-hard sports fan. New episodes are uploaded every week and they vary from analysis of the most pressing legal issues in sports to interviews with members of the sports business and legal communities.
First, LABO is the only video blog on the Internet dedicated to discussing sports law issues. Tony's strategy in creating a video blog in the first place follows studies that the attention span of a person has dropped significantly to as low as 8 seconds as of 2013. Tony knew that creating a written blog would be hard but it was even harder with these stats in mind. However, being a communications major, he thought that creating a video blog would be more effective.
Another strategy of mine is to create engaging content that appeals to a wide audience. Tony touches on multiple legal issues, but likewise discuss many different sports. In order to accomplish this, Tony conducts thorough news and legal research on pressing issues in sports and attaches a legal spin to them. He then drafts a script, films it, edits it, publishes it, and markets it all on his own.
LABO is a growing brand in the legal blog space and Tony accomplishes that task by active engaging with audience in the social media space. The engagement is mainly concentrated in Twitter. So whether it's a simple tweet about a news article or actual discussion about a legal matter, he's always determined and committed to keep the conversation alive with the viewers.
Since its inception on December 23, 2011, Law and Batting Order has amassed over 20,000 video views. For a niche video blog, these stats are worth noting. Tony Iliakostas was also recognized by SportsNetworker as a Rising Star in Sports Business in 2014 and was awarded the 2014 "30 Under 30" Award in Sports Business by SportsLaunch Magazine.
Also, on December 6, 2015, the 100th LABO episode aired and this year, he'll be celebrating 5 years of Law and Batting Order. These are accolades Tony is most proud of as this is a testament of his commitment to building his brand as an aspiring legal journalist.
