Ghost Hunting On YouTube

Entered in User-Generated Content

Objective

The paranormal community on YouTube is one of the platform’s most passionate and distinctive subcultures. To celebrate Halloween 2025, YouTube aimed to honor this special community of creators through the creation of a long-form video where two creators, BenOfTheWeek and paranormal expert Kelsi Davies, immerse themselves in the community’s unique content format and learn how to hunt for ghosts through user generated experience and tips. By showcasing real life ghost hunting methods in our long form video, and a behind the scenes Witness Camera footage video which is a true part of this community, viewers were able to participate in this Ghost Hunting ritual on Halloween 2025 when the YouTube homepage was taken over with a dedicated Ghost Hunting Yoodle (YouTube logo takeover) and regional localized playlists.

The primary objectives were:

Strategy

The strategy focused on "Interactive Immersion," treating the global YouTube audience and creator community as the "remote experts" for a live-style investigation.

1. The Investigators: YouTube cast Benoftheweek and Kelsi Davies—creators with a healthy mix of expertise, skepticism and curiosity—to lead the investigation at a haunted location. This grounded the campaign in a relatable "audience surrogate" perspective.

2. The UGC "Lifeline" System: Instead of a scripted investigation, the execution relied on the expertise of the broader community and user generated content. Throughout the hunt, Ben and Kelsi received "lifelines" from legendary paranormal creators, including:

3. Interactive raw footage: In addition to showcasing a myriad of Ghost Hunting creators through UGC and the techniques they use throughout the hero video, YouTube also released "witness camera" footage—raw, unedited clips that allowed "armchair investigators" in the comments to scrub through the video, find their own "evidence," and share their theories, effectively turning the audience into secondary content creators.

Results

The campaign successfully demonstrated that "fans have moved from being consumers of culture to directly shaping it."
