With a new chapter in the Dutton saga, our goal was to leverage the Behind The Stories model that has found success with series like Yellowstone and 1883, and give fans a deeper look inside the making-of 1923, an epic story set during a unique time in history. We aimed to continue a rich tapestry of thematic ideas including family, legacy, and safeguarding a way of life consistent with past Dutton-focused series, while simultaneously showcasing the global footprint of this new and exciting chapter.
The story of 1923 takes place across several continents and the massive scope of production presented new and unique challenges to this team. A physically demanding production that is at the mercy of real-world elements (weather, animals, land conditions) created constant shifts in our proposed media capture schedules and required constant negotiations with talent and our production partners to lock down shoots. Plus, filming deep in rural Montana, in the remote African plains or out in the Atlantic Ocean made is logistically challenging and cost prohibitive to capture our normal behind-scenes-footage at the heart of our Behind The Story series. In addition, we introduced new animals beyond the typical livestock of the Dutton ranch, like a heard of elephants charging at our principal cast members; another new element that presented unique shooting conditions.
Despite all of the logistical challenges, by partnering closely with 101 Studios, leveraging local crews and tapping into our experienced in-house producing teams allowed us to capture truly incredible behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews from across the globe that brought fans deeper into the world of the Duttons. The 1923 Behind The Story series proved wildly popular with fans, earning millions of cross-platform views.
