VH1's 2 Cultures, 1 Couple

Entered in Multicultural Community Engagement

Objectives

The objective of 2 Cultures, 1 Couple was to explore the diverse and complicated inner workings of multicultural couples. By showing how two people could overcome differences in their cultural, religious, racial, and familial lives, we aimed to show our audience that our differences should be celebrated. The series amplified the voices and experiences of those who are often overlooked in mainstream media, in addition to being produced/directed by a woman.

Strategy and Execution

Over the years, the VH1’s diverse YouTube audience has consistently been drawn to content that deeply explores the inner workings of relationships, and this series aimed to give our audience more of what they wanted. The couples profiled in 2 Cultures, 1 Couple represent an incredibly diverse range of cultures, races, sexualities, family types, and genders. We featured folks who were Dominican, Chinese, Puerto Rican, German, Thai, Jamaican, Black, White, Gay, Straight, Transgender, and more! By including a broad spectrum of experiences, we aimed to reach a very diverse audience. In addition, one of our featured couples starred on VH1’s popular reality show, Love & Hip Hop, which gave the web series additional synergy. In the middle of the series run, COVID-19 hit and as our audience adjusted to their new reality, we re-strategized our rollout and re-edited an episode to feature our couples debating holiday traditions because we thought a little holiday cheer was needed during such a dire time. Additionally, we added three more zoom shoots to our roster to highlight how the couples were coping with the pandemic and how their cultures affected their own personal experiences quarantining.

Results

2022 became a year of reflection, as much of the country came out from under roughly two years of living in quarantine; we’ve entered an era of looking back on how things were in a moment when so much was uncertain, both in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic and 2020 Black Lives Matter and other racial/cultural justice movements. 2 Cultures, 1 Couple offers a loving light of hope to look back upon when reflecting upon otherwise relatively dark times. We to watched the series’ views continue to grow on YouTube throughout 2022; it’s earned over 2.4 million views!
