Sophie's World

Entered in Storytelling

Objectives

To destigmatize people living with Down syndrome.

Strategy and Execution

To humanize this topic, El Saha told the inspiring story of Alia and Sophie. Alia is a nutritional therapist at the Children’s Cancer Hospital in Egypt. Alia was thrilled when she found out she was pregnant with a little girl and read everything she could to make sure to give her daughter every advantage to be the smartest child. When it became apparent that Sophie had Down syndrome, Alia embraced her and everything that made Sophie unique. However, Sophie’s father could not face having a child with Down syndrome and left them, not even acknowledging that Sophie is his child. Alia believes that she doesn’t need to prepare Sophie for the world, but needs to prepare the world for Sophie. Alia works tirelessly to erase misconceptions through a national campaign targeting medical schools and universities, updating them with the latest curriculum regarding Down syndrome. Alia dreams that society will be more accepting of differences and believes that Sophie should be able to live out all of her dreams.
