People living with neuromuscular diseases often struggle to find information that is both medically credible, reflective of their lived experiences and addresses lifestyle. The Muscular Dystrophy Association created Quest Media as a lifestyle publication and trusted community platform, where people living with any of over 300 neuromuscular diseases can find accurate information, share their experiences, and connect with others navigating similar journeys.
Our objective was to create meaningful, two-way engagement by inviting members of the neuromuscular disease community to help shape Quest, not simply consume its content. Specifically, we:
Community engagement extends far beyond audience feedback—it is embedded in our content creation process. Quest Media's strategy is built on one guiding principle: listen first.
Rather than determining editorial priorities internally, we developed an audience-informed content strategy that continuously incorporates community feedback. Annual audience surveys, website analytics, search behavior, reader emails, and direct conversations all inform our editorial calendar, ensuring every story addresses the questions and challenges our community is facing.
These insights shaped eight core content pillars that guide every piece of content we produce: Science & Research, Personal Stories, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Independence, Advocacy & Progress, Health & Care, Tools & Resources, and Lifestyle.
Nearly all of Quest Media's writers, as well as it’s Editor-in-Chief, live with one of the neuromuscular diseases MDA serves, bringing firsthand perspective and credibility to every article. Throughout the year, MDA Ambassadors and community members contribute guest blogs, first-person essays, interviews, and podcast conversations that share authentic experiences and elevate voices often underrepresented in traditional lifestyle media.
We also created recurring opportunities for community participation across every platform:
This approach transformed Quest Media from a publisher into a collaborative platform where community members continuously shape the conversation.
The community-first strategy has resulted in sustained engagement, strong audience loyalty, and continued participation across Quest Media properties.
In 2025, Quest Media published 225 pieces of original content, including:
Quest Media continues to reach and engage audiences at scale:
Quest Media has redefined what community engagement looks like in nonprofit media. Rather than creating content for the neuromuscular disease community, we create it with them. Individuals living with neuromuscular diseases help identify the stories that need to be told, write those stories themselves, review products they use, and continuously shape editorial priorities. The result is a trusted platform that informs, empowers, and strengthens the community.
