More Than a Surprise: A Pathway to Possibility

Entered in Community Engagement

Objective

When Delta's social team discovered a viral video featuring The X for Boys, an Albany-based organization dedicated to teaching young boys life skills, leadership and personal development, we saw an opportunity to do more than join the conversation. We saw a chance to create a meaningful impact.

The original video showed founder King Randall I using an airport visit as a classroom, teaching students how to confidently navigate air travel while broadening their understanding of the world around them. The moment resonated across social because it emboided curiousity, aspiration and the power of exposure to new experiences.

Delta's objective was to turn that inspiration into action by creating an experience that would expand educational opportunityies, introduce students to career pathways in aviation and demonstrate what is possible when community organizations and brands work together with purpose.

Rather than simply recognizing a viral moment, we aimed to amplify the mission of The X for Boys. Our goals were to inspire the next generation, create authentic connections between Delta employees and students, amplify the impact of an organization already making a difference in its community, and transform social engagement into tangible action that delivered lasting value beyond a social moment online.

By leveraging the power of social listening, Delta sought out to demonstrate how community engagement can move beyond conversation and create real-world opportunities that inspire future leaders.

Strategy

The strategy was rooted in a simple belief: some of the most powerful community engagement opportunities begin by listening.

A key component of the experience was direct interaction with Delta employees. Students asked questions, engaged in conversations, and learned from professionals representing various roles across the company. These authentic moments of connection helped connect the students to the people in these roles every day and see themselves in them one day.

After identifying the viral X for Boys content, Delta’s social team recognized that the story aligned closely with our commitment to connecting people to potential. Rather than approaching the moment as a traditional brand activation, we focused on how we could authentically support Delta’s messaging and the organization’s mission and create an impactful learning experience for the students.

Our team worked directly with X for Boys to understand what else the boys could be exposed to at our headquarters. We designed an immersive surprise-and-delight experience centered on the continued education of aviation and career exploration. The goal was not to create a photo opportunity, but to provide a hands-on introduction to the aviation industry and the career possibilities within it.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was coordinating multiple teams, experiences and schedules within Delta while ensuring the students had adequate time to fully engage with each part of the day. With several business units participating, careful planning was required to balance the agenda and create a seamless experience. The team worked closely across departments to build a schedule that maximized exposure while preserving time for curiosity and learning.

To bring the experience to life, the social team mobilized partners from across Delta’s business, creating a collaborative effort that showcased the many career paths and opportunities within aviation. Working closely with Flight Operations, In-Flight Service and the Delta Flight Museum, we designed a day of immersive learning for nineteen students.

Each experience was intentionally selected to provide students with exposure and understanding to the aviation industry. Through Flight Operations, students met aviation professionals and learned firsthand about the responsibilities and training required to become a pilot. Additionally, the students were able to see and experience the flight simulators at our headquarters which gave them a first look on how pilots train on new aircrafts. In partnership with In-Flight Service, students visited and participated in flight attendant training, learned about safety procedures, customer service and the critical role flight attendants play in the travel experience. At the Delta Flight Museum, students received a guided tour by a pilot to Delta’s 747 Experience, allowing them to step aboard a historic aircraft and explore aviation history up close.

By combining social listening, employee engagement, experiential learning and storytelling, Delta transformed a single online moment into a community-centered initiative that delivered educational value, elevated a non-profit organization and inspired a group of young leaders.

Results

The X for Boys surprise-and-delight initiative demonstrated the power of turning social engagement into a meaningful community impact. Nineteen students participated in a one-of-a-kind aviation experience at Delta, gaining firsthand exposure to career opportunities, mentorship and educational experiences designed to broaden their understanding of what is possible.

The initiative generated visibility for both X for Boys and its mission. Stories from the experience extended beyond social channels through national media coverage, including a feature on NBC’s TODAY, where founder King discussed the impact the experience had on the students and the organization.

To help support the group’s continued work, Delta surprised The X for Boys with a $10,000 donation, providing additional resources to further its mission of developing future leaders through mentorship, education and life-skills training. The story resonated strongly across digital audiences generating 14.3 million in earned media reach and 42,400 organic social engagements.

Beyond the metrics, the initiative delivered something more meaningful: access, inspiration and possibility. Students were introduced to career paths they may never have previously considered, connected directly with aviation professionals and experienced an environment that encouraged them to dream bigger and Keep Climbing.

What began as a viral social moment evolved into a lasting community impact story, demonstrating how brands can use their platforms, people and resources to create opportunities that extend far beyond the screen.
