UCLA: Research Powers Miracles

Entered in Animation

Objective

UCLA set out to tell a research story that felt human, not institutional. The objective was to create a cinematic, emotionally resonant film that demonstrated the real-world impact of UCLA research by focusing on one true, life-saving medical breakthrough and the people connected to it. The work needed to make complex science accessible, reflect UCLA’s theme of connection across campus and community, and engage a broad audience—from donors and alumni to students, faculty, and families, while marking a moment of leadership transition and reinforcing lifelong connection to the university.

Strategy

To bring UCLA’s story to life, Gravity focused on a strategy that emphasized human connection over institutional messaging. Recognizing an opportunity to highlight a single medical breakthrough—the first lung transplant using the Organ Care System—our team crafted a narrative that made complex research relatable and emotionally resonant. The execution combined cinematic 3D animation with a clear visual thread: a UCLA plush bear that travels from campus to hospital to family, symbolizing hope, connection, and the ripple effect of research. Using AI-assisted references alongside meticulous manual editing, we developed detailed storyboards before animators, designers, writers, and sound artists collaboratively handcrafted every frame. Warm lighting, intimate pacing, and recognizable UCLA locations anchored the story in authenticity, while flexible versions of the final asset allowed distribution across social, email, and executive communications, ensuring the narrative reached diverse audiences from donors and alumni to students, faculty, and the broader community.
