Nat Geo x Toyota 4Runner

Objective

“What does the wild mean to you?” This central question anchored our campaign to launch the newest Toyota 4Runner. While the vehicle is legendary for its rugged capability, Toyota faced a specific challenge: they needed to reframe the 4Runner for the modern adventure seeker. The goal was to move the brand perception beyond simply being a “tough truck” to being the essential enabler of self-reliance, freedom, and awe. To achieve this, National Geographic CreativeWorks sent adventure photographer Jody MacDonald into the rugged landscapes of Bend, Oregon, to explore how the wilderness holds different meanings for every explorer—from a playground to a proving ground to a sanctuary. Through her lens, our objective was to demonstrate that no matter how you define your relationship to the wild, the Toyota 4Runner is the perfect vehicle to help you discover it, connecting with that Nat Geo audience that views the outdoors as a place of limitless possibility.

Strategy

The narrative structure revolved around three story environments: Playground, Proving Ground, and Sanctuary. These tentpoles guided where we went, what we captured, and how the narrative unfolded in the field. Each concept was treated as a distinct chapter, allowing us to tell multiple stories from a single journey without repeating footage or staging moments. Bend, Oregon was selected for practical reasons as much as creative ones. The region allowed us to access dramatically different landscapes within short travel distances, making it possible to capture climbing, forest travel, open roads, and remote settings within a single highly efficient shoot schedule. Every scene was captured with multiple formats in mind. Cinematic 16x9 footage, vertical video, and photography were produced simultaneously so the story could live naturally across platforms without feeling fragmented. Vehicle integration was always organic and never scripted. We showed capability through use – carrying gear, navigating terrain, and enabling access.
