MDA 75th Anniversary: Legacy, Impact, Momentum

Entered in Integrated Campaign

Objective

The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s 75th anniversary redefined what a legacy campaign can be. Rather than simply celebrating history, we transformed the milestone into a year-long, fully integrated campaign that connected past progress to present relevance and future momentum. By elevating the voices of families, caregivers, clinicians, partners, and advocates, the campaign ensured the community was not just part of MDA’s history, but at the center of its future.

The campaign activated across every corner of the organization and every public touchpoint, creating a unified narrative of progress, trust, and possibility. It introduced MDA to new audiences while deepening relationships with long-time supporters, reinforcing our leadership across more than 300 neuromuscular diseases. Authentic storytelling and targeted outreach helped reengage lapsed donors and corporate partners, while strengthening emotional connection, community pride, and long-term loyalty. Beyond driving strong performance across social, digital, media, and fundraising channels, the campaign built lasting emotional capital, positioning MDA as a modern, relevant, and trusted leader for the next generation.

The campaign objectives were to modernize MDA’s brand relevance, strengthen brand equity, and deliver a unified narrative that elevated authentic community voices. We sought to drive measurable engagement, expand awareness among new audiences, and reengage legacy supporters. Ultimately, the campaign aimed to move audiences from awareness to trust and action, leveraging the anniversary as a strategic platform to accelerate momentum, deepen relationships, and strengthen MDA’s future growth and mission impact.

Strategy

The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s 75th Anniversary campaign was designed as a yearlong, integrated platform not a single creative moment. Every element, from the national PSA to staff and partner toolkits, carried one cohesive story: MDA has moved through eras of progress, and each era has built the foundation for today’s impact and future momentum.

The campaign began with the reveal of the 75th Anniversary logo. Blending grayscale into a vibrant colors, the design symbolized a progression from darkness to possibility. For families, it reflected the shift from uncertainty to hope as treatments and care advance. For clinicians and researchers, it represented the evolution of neuromuscular medicine into a rapidly advancing specialty. For donors and partners, it echoed the cultural legacy of the MDA Telethon, from its black-and-white origins to its national influence today.

A nationally distributed broadcast PSA established the campaign’s tone. Opening in black and white and transitioning into full color, it visually mirrored MDA’s journey while featuring a unified chorus of community voices. The PSA served as a creative anchor, setting a visual and narrative framework carried across all channels.

The campaign lived everywhere audiences already engaged with MDA. Email communications integrated anniversary storytelling into ongoing supporter relationships. Organic and paid social featured mission-driven videos, community stories, and real-time impact. Website updates reinforced the anniversary identity, using a microsite MDA75.org, a dedicated campaign hub featuring an interactive timeline highlighting 75 years of progress. Quest Media further amplified the campaign through a commemorative issue featuring campaign branding and milestone storytelling.

In-person experiences brought the campaign to life. At MDA’s national conference, attendees walked through a “Legacy Corridor” showcasing a timeline of impact, while a dedicated anniversary booth invited engagement through interactive quizzes, photo opportunities, and volunteer recruitment activations.

Video served as the campaign’s storytelling engine. In addition to the PSA, MDA released three social series deepened engagement: “People Behind the PSA” shared personal stories from campaign participants; “75 Strong” featured long-time community members reflecting on MDA’s impact; and “Mission Milestones” highlighted breakthroughs across mission pillars. Released in waves, these stories sustained engagement and reinforced the campaign narrative throughout the year.

To ensure consistency, MDA equipped staff, volunteers, and partners with comprehensive toolkits including messaging guidance, visual assets, and social templates. This empowered stakeholders to extend the campaign across their own channels while maintaining narrative cohesion.

By integrating storytelling across broadcast, digital, social, in-person, and partner platforms, the campaign created a unified, multichannel experience. Audiences encountered the same core narrative regardless of entry point, reinforcing trust, emotional connection, and recognition.

The 75th Anniversary campaign succeed because it was not treated as a moment but as an integrated campaign embedded into how MDA communicated throughout the year.

By aligning creative, messaging, and activations under a single narrative of progress across the year, MDA strengthened trust, modernized relevance and built momentum for the future.

This campaign did not just celebrate 75 years. It positioned MDA for what comes next and how we move forward together.

Results

The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s 75th Anniversary campaign delivered measurable impact across brand perception, engagement, media visibility, and donor behavior. Beyond strong performance metrics, the campaign achieved something far less common in nonprofit marketing: meaningful gains in brand equity, audience trust, and long-term engagement.

Brand strength increased across key indicators, demonstrating that the campaign did more than celebrate history—it repositioned MDA for a new generation. Overall Brand Equity rose from 27.9 to 30, reflecting increased confidence in MDA’s leadership and impact. Among newer audiences, Brand Equity reached 48.8, while Brand Momentum surged from 30.4 to 37.4, signaling increased relevance and future growth potential.

Integrated storytelling drove measurable audience movement through the engagement funnel. Awareness reached 73 percent, Familiarity rose to 46.1 percent, and Trial reached 23.7 percent—clear evidence that consistent, omnichannel storytelling successfully moved audiences from awareness to deeper engagement and action.

Media performance reshaped MDA’s national visibility, generating more than 16,000 editorial mentions and 22.4 billion potential reach. Media quality improved by 17 points, positive sentiment increased 20 percent year over year, and MDA achieved a dominant 58.8 percent share of voice within its category.

Donor performance showed equally strong momentum after years of decline. Annual donor retention reached 53 percent, the highest in eight years, while revenue retention increased from 52.8 percent to 61.7 percent. Average donor value rose 22 percent year over year, and overall revenue decline stabilized from an 18 percent drop in 2023 to just 1.2 percent in 2025.

Together, these results demonstrate a campaign that strengthened trust, expanded relevance, and built lasting momentum for MDA’s future.
