Approaching Retirement: Getting Gen X from Good to Great

Entered in Financial Services

Objective

As retirement shifts from a distant concept to an immediate reality, Gen X, more than 65 million Americans strong, stands at a pivotal financial crossroads. This generation became self-directed investors by necessity, entering the workforce during the rise of the 401(k) and navigating decades of market volatility with limited guidance and planning tools. While Gen X investors express confidence in their investment decisions, a significant portion lack a formal plan to support multi-decade retirement income, legacy goals, and competing family responsibilities.

Recognizing this pivotal moment and building on last year’s successful research driven collaboration, Equitable again partnered with Custom Content from WSJ to address this need through an innovative, insights-driven program, "Approaching Retirement: Getting Gen X from Good to Great." Grounded in proprietary insights from WSJ Intelligence, this initiative delivered authority, perspective, and practical frameworks to help elevate advisor–client conversations.

The primary objective was to position Equitable as a financial leader helping advisors evolve from asset managers into comprehensive wealth partners, while equipping them with credible, actionable insights to apply with their Gen X clients. The program focused on educating advisors about Gen X attitudes and behaviors, enabling more confident conversations around retirement income and legacy planning, and reinforcing Equitable’s long term commitment to advisor growth. By pairing Equitable’s financial expertise with Custom Content from WSJ’s trusted storytelling, the initiative positioned Equitable as a catalyst for deeper advisor trust, smarter conversations, and a more actionable approach for financial professionals, guiding Gen X investors through this consequential chapter of their lives.

Strategy

"Approaching Retirement: Getting Gen X from Good to Great" was conceived as a research-led thought leadership platform designed to meet financial professionals with depth, credibility, and practical relevance. The program came to life through a custom research study commissioned by Equitable and conducted by WSJ Intelligence, surveying high-earning U.S. investors with a primary focus on Gen X. This foundational research framed the strategic opportunity for financial professionals to support Gen X as they move beyond accumulation and toward more complex planning needs, including income, longevity, and legacy.

Building on a proven collaboration, Equitable and Custom Content from WSJ strengthened our ongoing partnership by uniting complementary strengths. Equitable brought deep expertise in retirement and wealth management, along with a clear commitment to helping financial professionals evolve their practices. Custom Content from WSJ contributed unmatched authority in research, analysis, and storytelling, ensuring the insights were delivered with clarity, credibility, and impact.

The research was translated into a cohesive content ecosystem designed to educate, empower, and activate financial professionals. A comprehensive white paper served as the cornerstone, distilling complex findings into strategic insights and practical planning considerations advisors could apply directly with clients. To expand accessibility and reinforce key themes, the program also included an insights-driven article that synthesized the study into concise, advisor-focused takeaways. Additionally an executive Q&A with Nick Lane, President of Equitable, further elevated our initiative by offering a leadership perspective on Gen X planning priorities and the growing importance of holistic advice.

Distribution was equally intentional. Custom Content from WSJ amplified the program across premium, advisor-trusted environments and formats within the WSJ digital ecosystem, ensuring the content reached financial professionals in the context they rely on most for credible guidance. This approach reinforced Equitable’s leadership through association with one of the most respected voices in business journalism.

Executing the program required disciplined coordination across research, editorial, legal, compliance, public relations, and marketing teams. Stringent financial services standards demanded precision at every stage, from research development to content approval and launch.

Ultimately by grounding our program in original research and elevating it through authoritative storytelling, "Approaching Retirement: Getting Gen X from Good to Great," delivered a seamless, multifaceted platform that elevated insight, strengthened advisor confidence, and reinforced Equitable’s role as a trusted partner guiding the future of retirement planning.

Results

“Approaching Retirement: Getting Gen X from Good to Great” achieved its objectives by translating original research into influence, engagement, and measurable value for the financial professional community. The program strengthened Equitable’s position as a trusted financial leader at a pivotal moment for Gen X investors, while underscoring the impact of our ongoing partnership.

The initiative delivered standout performance as advisors spent meaningful time engaging with the white paper and supporting articles generating millions of impressions and exceeding our digital benchmarks.
