Varnamtown

Entered in True Crime & Documentary Podcast

Objective

A few years ago, Kyle MacLachlan, the star of Twin Peaks, heard a rumor that Pablo Escobar did a deal in the early 1980s with a remote, coastal Southern town of 300 people. In exchange for vast wealth and limitless cocaine, Escobar would be allowed to land planes and ships in the area. Kyle was immediately enthralled by the story and called investigative journalist, Joshua Davis. The two would go on to explore the rumor, journey to Varnamtown to knock on doors and find out what really happened when a firehose of money and cocaine is turned on a small, tight knit community.

Strategy

Kyle MacLachlan is known to many as FBI Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks. In that role, he investigated oddball characters and was oftentimes led to dead ends. Fans were used to seeing Kyle in that role and missed it dearly. Thus, Kyle perfectly reunited with his investigative self to host Varnamtown, though this time it was true crime. Kyle and Joshua set out for North Carolina to speak to locals and engrain themselves in the Varnamtown community. This resulted in an enthralling eight episode podcast series divulging the secrets and stories embedded within Varnamtown.
