Objective

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is the leading yearly awards program celebrating the creators, voice actors, and musicians powering the global love of anime. Held live in Tokyo, Japan, the Anime Awards honors the craft of anime, while encouraging global fans to cheer and vote for their favorite series to take home the top honors. Across 32 categories, the Crunchyroll Anime Awards aims to create a space for anime fans to come together and celebrate the medium they love so much, while shining a spotlight on the art form powering and inspiring
pop culture.

Strategy

To honor the creators and performers in Japan who power the global love of anime, the Crunchyroll Anime Awards brings together a multitude of high-profile, celebrity anime fans including professional athletes, musicians, creators, and pairs them with global anime fans to celebrate anime. The Anime Awards are purpose-built to drive fan engagement and bring attention to the medium of anime.

The 2024 presenter lineup included fans from across entertainment including three-time GRAMMY-winning recording artist Megan Theem Stallion, Japanese singer-songwriter LiSA, award-winning actress Iman Vellani (MS. MARVEL and THE MARVELS), Academy Award winning duo Phil Lord & Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), director Joaquim Dos Santos (Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse), sports superstar DeMarcus Lawrence (NFL’s Dallas Cowboys) and wrestling legend Mercedes Varnado (Former WWE World Champion), and many, many more.


It also included musical performances from Shing02, OMA, SPIN MASTER A-1, and YAOSOBI, plus a first-ever live performance of the official Anime Awards theme Song by Hiroyuki SAWANO (Attack on Titan, Solo Leveling) and KOHTA YAMAMOTO (Attack on Titan, The Seven Deadly Sins).

The Crunchyroll team gained audience for The Anime Awards through a company-wide push, bringing together its events, communications, social media, and production teams to build a truly 360 approach to its promotional efforts.

In all, the awards show was built to both bolster the worldwide popularity of Anime, as well as develop an increased critical acclaim for the medium.

Results

As a votes-based awards show, The Anime Awards 2024 succeeded in bringing the world together to vote for and celebrate their favorite anime. With 34 million fan votes cast from more than 200 countries and territories, including particularly engaged countries (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Mexico, and the United States. Overall, the votes campaign for The Anime Awards saw an increase of 18 million votes from 2023.

Across more than 650 social posts supporting The Anime Awards globally, Crunchyroll earned more than 3.9M total engagements across all platforms. Notable posts included throwbacks to "Best Continuing Series AA23 Winner Throwback" on TikTok (2.8M views, 428k engagements, a 15.3% engagement rate) and "Jujutsu Kaisen AOTY Nominee Fancam" on Instagram (.7M views, 101k engagements including a like from Michael B Jordan, a 5.9% engagement rate).

On the earned media side, The Anime Awards also received more than 400 million estimated media impresses across 1000-plus press articles by key outlets such as Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Teen Vogue, IGN, and more.
