Monster High: Sparks & Spells

Objectives

The primary goal of the Nickelodeon Digital Studios team was to bring together our audience’s favorite parts of the Monster High franchise all in one place. Fan favorites are struck by a magical spark and must sing their circumstances in true rock opera format. 

 

Strategy and Execution

We think of our digital 2D series as the quirky side quest of the main linear show. Our goal for this iteration was to give the audience a deeper understanding of our characters in the most fun way possible, with music. By creating an environment riddled with chaos and enchanted by magic our monsters were forced to confront personal challenges that would otherwise be difficult to articulate; whether it's the burden of pleasing your parents, figuring out your unique path, or finally finding your voice. Everyone is dealing with something, and with friends, you can tackle it together. Plus let's be honest, life lessons are better with a beat. 

 

Results

The series was a partnership between an in-house collaboration and our animation production partner Cartuna. Development was handled in-house and animation was out of house. For music, we worked with our internal Nick music production team. The top video in the series has gained over 1M views.
