Wael Dahdouh's story | AJ+ Arabi

Entered in Documentary

Al Jazeera's bureau chief in Gaza, Wael Dahdouh, has lost most of his family members and relatives, but was determined to continue covering the Israeli bombardment of the enclave, until he was injured and had to go to Qatar for treatment.

He's being called "Al-Jabal," Arabic for "the mountain," for continuing to stand tall as tragedy has befallen him over the course of the Gaza war. Wael became a symbol of the resilience of the Palestinian people and the determination of journalists to expose what is happening in Gaza.

Wael while reporting to Aljazeera Channel was speaking as a Palestinian Journalis, he used to tell stories of other people. That time we wanted to tell people his own story, and to show the human side behind the camera.

Strategy and Execution

We have several cameramen who works for us from Gaza, we chose the one who has close ties with Wael so he would be more comfortable and share personal and human aspects. We prepared the briefing that includes questions and shortlist. Then we held a meeting the cameraman to make everything clear. Then he shot the story.

The story got high engagement score as the audience engaged with the story because it has something that they never saw somewhere else. This was reflected on the numbers, it got more than 4M across all platforms.
