Since 2008, FOX Sports University has worked to bridge the gap between academia and the sports industry by integrating real FOX Sports business challenges into university curricula. For the 2025–2026 academic year, the program launched its most ambitious initiative to date: the inaugural World Cup of FOX Sports U, a nationwide competition built around FOX Sports’ historic coverage of FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The initiative pursued three core objectives:
• Experiential Learning: Give students hands-on experience addressing an active business priority through semester-long campaign development, executive feedback and competition-style presentations.
• Professional Development: Introduce students to career paths across sports media and connect them directly with the executives, broadcasters and soccer leaders shaping FOX Sports’ World Cup coverage.
• Community Engagement: Strengthen relationships with academic institutions nationwide while incorporating FOX Sports’ longtime nonprofit partner, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, into the student challenge.
FOX Sports University classes have always addressed current, real-world business priorities, but partner schools traditionally worked on distinct projects. By uniting 20 universities around one tentpole event and a shared national competition, the World Cup of FOX Sports U expanded the program’s proven educational model in an entirely new way. Students across the country contributed fresh strategic thinking to the same FOX Sports priority while competing for an opportunity to experience the network’s coverage of the world’s biggest sporting event firsthand.
FOX Sports University designed the World Cup of FOX Sports U as a yearlong national competition centered on one shared, real-world brief: develop an integrated strategic campaign that would build excitement and drive tune-in for FIFA World Cup 2026™ while incorporating community impact in support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Eight universities participated during the fall semester, followed by 12 additional universities in the spring. Within each partner class, students worked in teams to apply their coursework to audience strategy, creative development, social media, experiential marketing, partnerships and community engagement. FOX Sports executives and business partners introduced the challenge, shared industry insight and provided feedback throughout the semester before returning to evaluate students’ final presentations.
Campaigns were assessed on the strength of the central idea, alignment with FOX Sports’ World Cup objectives, creativity, community impact, social and experiential execution, and overall polish. The strongest campaign from each semester advanced to a final executive review, with one team selected as the overall Grand Champion. The Grand Prize was designed to complete the experiential-learning journey by bringing the winning team to Los Angeles to present its work and experience FOX Sports’ tournament coverage firsthand.
The initiative also extended beyond participating classrooms through the seven-stop Road to FIFA World Cup 2026™ speaker series. Throughout the academic year, hundreds of students heard directly from the broadcasters, executives and soccer leaders preparing for FOX Sports’ coverage. Panelists included U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino; Chicago Fire CMO Dan Moriarty; FOX Sports broadcasters Stu Holden, Alexi Lalas, Derek Rae, Tom Rinaldi, Rob Stone, John Strong and Jenny Taft; and FOX Sports leaders Eric Shanks, Whit Haskel, Eric Esteban, Ben Grossman, Nick Rago and Courtney Stockmal.
The campus conversations brought students behind the production curtain, provided insight into the planning required for a global sports event and introduced students to career paths across the industry. Together, the competition and speaker series created multiple levels of educational access. Participating classes completed semester-long strategic work with direct executive involvement, while broader campus communities gained access to industry leaders and an inside look at a historic live sports production.
The World Cup of FOX Sports U culminated with a panel of FOX Sports executive judges selecting a team from the University of Florida as the overall Grand Prize winner. The students and their professor were flown to Los Angeles to present their campaign to FOX Sports executives, tour the network’s FIFA World Cup™ operations and the FOX Studio Lot, attend FIFA World Cup on FOX After Hours with James Corden and experience the live Spain-Austria Round of 32 match at Los Angeles Stadium.
The Grand Prize delivered the program’s experiential learning objective, bringing students from classroom concept development to direct engagement with the people and production behind a global sporting event. It also reflected FOX Sports University’s continued impact: the winning professor was the program’s original faculty partner when FOX Sports U launched in 2008, while one member of the team is a Boys & Girls Clubs of America alumna.
At a national level, the competition engaged 20 university partners during one academic year, the largest footprint for a single competition in FOX Sports University history. The seven-stop speaker series extended that reach to hundreds of additional students, providing access to prominent broadcasters, executives and soccer leaders.
The World Cup of FOX Sports U built upon a program that has partnered with more than 40 institutions and empowered thousands of students. By combining applied learning, professional exposure and community connection on a national scale, the initiative became the program’s most ambitious expression yet of bringing the real world into the classroom.
