At our table, everyone eats: A restaurant-powered food security model

Entered in Non-Profit

Objective

Rethink Food set out to create a short, aspirational brand film that could introduce new audiences to our work—and what makes it different—in less than one minute.

Our goals were to build awareness of Rethink Food, show that we provide thoughtfully prepared, chef-led, high-quality meals, and distinguish our model from more traditional approaches to addressing food insecurity. We wanted viewers to understand that providing meals does not have to be separate from supporting restaurants, strengthening community organizations, and making better use of the resources already present in our food system.

Led by our founder and CEO, the 57-second film shares the idea at the heart of Rethink Food: restaurants can serve as essential community infrastructure for food security. They already have the culinary expertise, facilities, and local knowledge required to prepare nutritious, culturally relevant meals. Rethink Food connects and activates those resources with community organizations that understand where meals are needed most, enabling more people to access nourishing meals with dignity.

The film was intentionally designed to be emotional and aspirational rather than data-heavy. Ultimately, we wanted to create more than an “about us” video. We wanted a concise, memorable brand asset that could help potential partners, supporters, board members, and anyone encountering Rethink Food for the first time quickly understand both the tangible outcome of our work—real, chef-led meals—and the restaurant-powered food security model behind them.

Strategy

The central creative challenge was to communicate the scope and distinctiveness of Rethink Food’s work in under one minute. Our model connects restaurants and food businesses with trusted community organizations, bringing together food, culinary expertise, local knowledge, and distribution networks. Because that ecosystem can easily become technical, our strategy was to make the work tangible through the journey of food—from ingredients and kitchens to complete meals and communities.

We collaborated with a videographer to shape the film using footage we had recently captured. Rather than beginning with a new, highly scripted production, we reviewed the existing content and selected the moments that best represented the story we wanted to tell: fresh food being prepared, culinary expertise in action, thoughtfully prepared meals, community partnerships, and the people who bring the model to life.

The narrative is led by Rethink Food’s founder and CEO, offering a personal entry point into the organization’s larger vision. His perspective connects the origins of Rethink Food to the belief that restaurants can be more than businesses: they can serve as essential community infrastructure for food security, preparing nourishing, culturally relevant meals while supporting jobs and keeping resources circulating locally.

This approach allowed the film to feel immediate and authentic. The footage shows the work as it happens—across kitchens, vehicles, and community spaces—while the fast-paced edit conveys the collaborative energy and coordination required to bring the model to life.

Our primary challenge was creative rather than logistical: producing something impactful, differentiated, and aspirational in under one minute. Every image and line needed to serve a purpose. We needed to communicate urgency without centering crisis, demonstrate impact without relying on statistics, and convey the systems-level thinking that distinguishes Rethink Food without overexplaining its operations.

We addressed that challenge by centering abundance, movement, skill, and dignity. The film celebrates the strengths, expertise, and resources already present within communities. It focuses on the food itself, the people preparing it, and the local networks making access possible. Moments of black-and-white footage add emotional texture, while recurring images of colorful ingredients and complete meals reinforce the quality and care behind the work.

The result is a concise and versatile brand film that introduces Rethink Food’s mission, restaurant-powered model, and ambition without compromising clarity, dignity, or emotional impact.

Results

The film achieved its primary objective by giving Rethink Food a clear, distinctive, and memorable way to introduce our work to new audiences.

On Instagram, it received more than 10,000 organic views without paid promotion, advertising, or boosted distribution. While it was not created as a performance-marketing campaign, this organic reach demonstrated that the story could resonate with audiences on its own.

Its most meaningful result, however, is its continued value as Rethink Food’s primary brand film. It is featured prominently on our website’s homepage and used to introduce the organization to potential partners, supporters, new board members, and other key stakeholders. It has become a dependable opening to meetings and presentations, helping audiences quickly understand both the meals we provide and the restaurant-powered food security model that makes them possible.

The film also met our goal of differentiating Rethink Food. In 57 seconds, it moves beyond a conventional depiction of food assistance by showing that we provide thoughtfully prepared, chef-led, high-quality meals while building a model that supports restaurants, strengthens community organizations, and keeps resources circulating locally.

That story is backed by measurable organizational impact. Since 2017, Rethink Food has provided more than 35 million meals, directed more than $164 million to local restaurants and food businesses, and repurposed more than 3 million pounds of food.

We consider the film successful because it has become more than a one-time piece of content. It is now an enduring and frequently used expression of Rethink Food’s identity, work, and ambition.
